Activision’s New Trademark Teases Iconic Video Game Is Next for an Adaptation

Something interesting is happening in Hollywood! The major video game company is quietly preparing for another potential adaptation – whether it’s a TV show, a streaming series, or a movie in theaters.

The type of adaptation is to be determined at this time.

Activision isn’t new to making movies, but they don’t do it very often. Their last big film, 2016’s Warcraft, was a commercial success, earning over $439 million worldwide on a production budget of $160 million.

Activision Eyeing Crash Bandicoot TV or Movie Project?

They’ve also explored animated streaming, starting with Skylanders Academy on Netflix in 2016, which ran for three seasons. Now, ten years after those initial ventures, Activision has secured a trademark for Crash Bandicoot covering animated shows and films, and it’s valid until June 2036.

I’ve been hearing whispers about a possible Crash Bandicoot animated series on Netflix, and it sounds like Activision was seriously considering it. Unfortunately, those plans seem to have stalled… for now, at least. We’ll have to wait and see if it ever actually comes to fruition.

This new filing has reignited rumors, and sparked discussion about whether Crash Bandicoot could become a larger franchise, similar to Super Mario Bros. or Sonic the Hedgehog. The Sonic franchise, for example, is already planning a fourth installment.

Streaming services are eager to add Crash Bandicoot to their libraries, but a movie studio might end up securing the rights first.

Crash Bandicoot Could Soon Follow Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog

If you haven’t noticed how many popular movies and TV shows are now based on video games, you’re not alone – the list is extensive! This isn’t a complete list, and it doesn’t include future releases like the upcoming Legend of Zelda movie, but it highlights just how massive and lucrative the world of adapting games into other media has become.

  • Tomb Raider
  • Resident Evil
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Sonic The Hedgehog
  • Fallout
  • Arcane
  • The Last of Us
  • Street Fighter
  • Mortal Kombat

But wait, there’s more:

  • Pokemon
  • Five Nights at Freddy’s
  • Warcraft
  • Silent Hill
  • Uncharted
  • Twisted Metal
  • Castlevania
  • Halo
  • Gears of War

Plus, Activision is reportedly developing a new game, and a recent trademark filing for Crash Bandicoot suggests the company plans to create more adapted games in the future.

Considering the popularity of Crash Bandicoot and Sonic the Hedgehog – games enjoyed by many of the same players as PlayStation’s popular titles – it makes a lot of sense to consider bringing Crash, Dr. Neo Cortex, Coco, and the rest of the gang to television or film.

If Activision handles things well, it has the potential to be the next big video game franchise to become a Hollywood hit.
