Some spoilers for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms below!
The upcoming story, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will showcase a particularly dramatic trial by combat – one of the most intense we’ve seen in the world of Game of Thrones. According to the old laws of the story’s universe, people accused of crimes can request a trial where the outcome is decided by a duel. If the accused wins the duel, they are found innocent, but if they lose, they are immediately convicted.
As a huge fan of action in shows, I always thought some of the best moments in Game of Thrones were those trial-by-combat scenes. Like, who could forget Bronn chucking Vardis Egen through the moon door, or the Hound’s insane fight with Beric Dondarrion? And that battle between the Mountain and the Red Viper was just… brutal. But honestly, I have a feeling the fight coming up in AKOFTK is going to top them all. I’m really excited to see it!
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Centers On A Trial Of Seven
The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on The Hedge Knight, the first story in the Tales of Dunk and Egg series. The story revolves around a tournament at Ashford Meadow, and all the events of that day build towards a duel between Duncan the Tall and Prince Aerion Targaryen.
When Duncan hit him, Aerion insisted on a trial by seven, hoping to publicly shame the hedge knight. Because a Targaryen prince was involved, the event quickly became a spectacle, attracting skilled warriors and powerful lords eager to witness – and participate in – what everyone believed would be a legendary contest. It became memorable, but not for the reasons anyone expected.
Trial Of Seven Is A Westerosi Trial By Combat Custom
Trial by combat, a practice involving seven fighters, is a tradition in Westeros. It likely originated across the Narrow Sea with the Andals, who arrived thousands of years ago as described in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. This custom is closely linked to the Faith of the Seven, with the seven combatants honoring the gods to hopefully achieve a fairer result.
In George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, people accused of crimes can either fight their own battles in a trial by combat, or choose someone else to fight for them. Because of this, trials by seven are incredibly uncommon. As Tyrion Lannister discovered, finding even one skilled champion is challenging, let alone six or seven. Like all trials by combat, fighters can surrender without anyone being killed.
Another Famous Trial Of Seven Involved A Targaryen King
Trials by seven, where seven people decide a case, are extremely uncommon because it’s hard to find enough participants. The only other significant one mentioned in George R.R. Martin’s stories happened around 150 years before the main events, and it famously involved someone from the Targaryen family.
In seasons 5 and 6 of Game of Thrones, a religious rebellion called the Faith Militant challenged King Maegor I Targaryen’s claim to the Iron Throne. Maegor responded by demanding a trial by combat – a battle against seven warriors representing the faith – to prove his right to rule.
Nearly everyone died, although Maegor survived but remained in a coma for several weeks. The upcoming series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, promises to be just as thrilling and impactful.
