Director Mike Flanagan is well-known for his successful adaptations of Stephen King’s work. But he’s also demonstrated his talent adapting other stories, and he has several new projects planned, including a remake of the 1973 film, ‘The Exorcist’.
A new Exorcist film was announced in May 2024, and will be produced by Blumhouse Productions and Morgan Creek. This announcement followed the disappointing box office performance of David Gordon Green’s 2023 film, The Exorcist: Believer. Director Mike Flanagan, who is helming the new project, has hinted he’d like to work with Rebecca Ferguson again on this reboot, as he mentioned at Motor City Comic Con.
During a panel at Motor City Comic Con, filmmaker Mike Flanagan discussed his previous work with actress Rebecca Ferguson, known for her role in Dune, on Doctor Sleep, which is a continuation of the story told in The Shining.
Flanagan said she’s been occupied with a small independent film called Dune and is currently filming Season 3 of Silo, which makes a reunion difficult at the moment.
I was so impressed to hear she managed to star in what’s become one of the biggest hits on Netflix right now! Apparently, it’s a project from the amazing Kathryn Bigelow. Everyone’s been talking about how good it is, and it shot straight to the top of Netflix’s charts after a quick run in cinemas.
Flanagan explained that Rebecca is a very active creator, and they stay in touch regularly. About every two months, she’ll reach out just to check in, and he’ll use those moments to ask if she’s interested in collaborating on a project or discussing new ideas.
The creator of The Haunting of Hill House said they’re eager to work with a particular actress, explaining she’s usually very busy, but they’re hopeful they’ll be able to collaborate in the future. They wouldn’t reveal which role they have in mind for her, but shared that she was among the first people they contacted when they got the job on The Exorcist.
Naomi Ferguson gained recognition for her role as Rose the Hat in the 2019 film, which also featured Ewan McGregor. The director frequently works with a core group of actors, so another collaboration with Ferguson is likely.
What’s Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist About?
The director recently finished filming his new version of a project, along with other work like The Dark Tower. He chose to make Carrie first, which unfortunately pushed back the start of The Exorcist. He recently stated that filming hasn’t begun on The Exorcist and it won’t be released next March. However, he also confirmed the film is still in development and everything is on track.
Details are scarce about Mike Flanagan’s upcoming take on The Exorcist. However, it will be a fresh start for the franchise, not a continuation of the 2013 film The Exorcist: Believer, which many expected. The project was initially touted as a completely new story within the world of The Exorcist. Currently, no cast members have been announced, and it’s unknown if David Gordon Green will be involved.
Although a firm release date hasn’t been announced, the new Exorcist movie was initially planned to be released in March 2026.
