- The iconic ‘Buy Bitcoin‘ sign that was held up behind Janet Yellen was sold at an auction for 16 BTC.Proceeds from the auction will go to fund a Bitcoin layer-2 startup called Tirrel Corp.
During her televised Congressional hearing in July 2017, Janet Yellen was famously photographed holding an ‘Buy Bitcoin’ sign, which is now up for sale at the price of 16 Bitcoins, approximately equating to $1 million.
At Scarce.City, the auction brokerage, we set a new record for the highest sale price on our platform during this transaction.
The auction itself was held at PubKey, a Bitcoin-themed bar in New York City.
According to a tweet from PubKey, the new owner of the sign goes by the name Squirrekkywrath online.
There isn’t much information available about the new owner. Alex Thorn, the head of research at Galaxy, described him as an “experienced Bitcoin figure who is relatively unknown to the public.”
Previously, in an interview with CoinDesk, Christian Langalis, waving the sign, mentioned that the earned funds would be used to support his business, Tirrel Corp, which is working on creating a Bitcoin Lightning network wallet through the platform Urbit.
During a 2017 hearing for the House Financial Services Committee, Langalis was taken out of the building after being caught breaking the rules by waving a sign. At the same time, the photo of this incident spread rapidly online.
