James Van Der Beek is auctioning off items from his time on Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues to help cover the costs of his cancer treatment. All money raised will go directly towards his care. Fans can bid on things like clothes he wore in the Dawson’s Creek pilot, the necklace Dawson gave Joey, and decorations from his character’s bedroom – including an E.T. plush and an Indiana Jones poster. He’s also offering his cleats and hat from the movie Varsity Blues.
The auction, part of Propstore’s Entertainment Live Auction, will take place from December 5th to 7th. James Van Der Beek explained to People magazine that he’s been keeping these collectibles for a long time, waiting for the right moment to share them. Given recent unexpected life changes, he feels now is the time. While it’s a little bittersweet to let go of these items, he’s happy to offer them through Propstore to fans who have enjoyed his work over the years.
In 2024, actor James Van Der Beek received a diagnosis of colorectal cancer. He had planned to share the news in an interview with People magazine, hoping to raise awareness and control how his story was told. However, he had to change his plans when a tabloid threatened to publish the information first. This September, Van Der Beek unfortunately missed a charity reading of the Dawson’s Creek pilot episode – meant to help fund his treatment – because he was battling stomach viruses. Lin-Manuel Miranda stepped in to take his place. In a video message, Van Der Beek expressed his disappointment at not being able to attend in person, thanking the cast, crew, and especially the fans for their support and generosity. He called the fans ‘the best in the world’.
