But honestly, the new manga adaptation Netflix is doing is showing everyone how truly amazing those one-on-one sword fights should look. It’s cool to see Netflix investing so much in anime and manga – One Piece is just one of many adaptations they’re doing, and with season 2 already coming, they’re clearly not stopping anytime soon!

Last Samurai Standing‘s Fight Scenes Are On Another Level
Netflix released the manga adaptation, Last Samurai Standing, in November 2025. The show centers around a battle royale with 292 samurai, prioritizing impressive and skillfully done fight choreography over complex storytelling. Reviews of Last Samurai Standing consistently highlight the exciting and realistic sword fights as a major strength.
The show’s action sequences are filmed in long, unbroken shots with very few computer-generated effects, which really highlights the skills of the actors and stunt performers. The fight choreography is fast-paced and smooth, and the camera work creates a sense of exciting chaos fitting for a battle royale, all while keeping the focus on the show’s central characters.
While the show doesn’t have the same intricate plot as battle royales like Squid Game or Alice in Borderland, Netflix understood what made Last Samurai Standing truly special: its incredible fight choreography. The action sequences are consistently exciting and well-done.
One Piece Season 1 Needed Better Hand-To-Hand Fight Scenes
Thinking about anime adapted by Netflix, One Piece immediately comes to mind. While many of its action sequences—particularly those with lots of digital effects, like the attack on Arlong Park—were great, the close-up, individual fight scenes weren’t as smooth or well-done as those in Last Samurai Standing.
The sword fights, especially those with Zoro, were still well-made with good camera angles and impressive stunts, and they didn’t rely on quick cuts as much as many Western action series. However, when compared to the fights in Last Samurai Standing, the hand-to-hand combat in One Piece doesn’t seem quite as strong as we first thought.
Fans are hoping the next season of One Piece will be even better, and actor Mackenyu promises the action sequences will be more intense. He specifically mentioned his character, Zoro, will be involved in particularly dangerous fights. Mackenyu shared that he’s bringing in the same stunt team from his work on the Rurouni Kenshin movie, with the goal of making the fights as exciting and impactful as those seen in Last Samurai Standing.
Anime Adaptations Should Never Overlook The Fight Scenes

Anime and manga adaptations, like in Last Samurai Standing, absolutely need to prioritize action sequences. While it’s vital to capture the story, characters, and overall feeling of the original work in a live-action version, exciting fight scenes are a must.
Anime and manga often showcase action scenes that are more dynamic and visually interesting than those in most Western animated or live-action shows. Because of this, accurately portraying these unique action sequences is crucial when adapting these stories for other audiences.
Shows like Last Samurai Standing and the live-action Yu Yu Hakusho demonstrate how to successfully adapt action from anime or manga. Their fight scenes are energetic, thrilling, and capture the feel of the original material. Future adaptations, including the second season of One Piece and any more episodes of Last Samurai Standing, should follow this example.
