Warning: potential spoilers for It: Welcome To Derry.
The third episode of It: Welcome to Derry builds anticipation for Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård) and also hints at a major heartbreaking event from Stephen King’s novel. The world of Stephen King’s It is being further explored with the series Welcome to Derry, which serves as a prequel to Andy Muschietti’s It films.
Welcome to Derry revisits the 1960s, introducing a new generation of children and adults who encounter It in various terrifying forms. As the kids attempt to prove the creature’s existence to clear a father wrongly accused of murder, the adults search for It’s hiding place, driven by the military’s desire to weaponize it.
The third episode of Welcome to Derry follows the military as they use Dick Hallorann’s (Chris Chalk) psychic ability to locate It’s hiding place. Meanwhile, the children capture photographic evidence of the creature’s terrifying presence after being frightened by it in the cemetery. Through Hallorann’s help and the military’s actions, Welcome to Derry is now setting the stage for one of the most heartbreaking storylines from the original book.
It: Welcome To Derry Episode 3 Teased The Black Spot Tragedy
In the third episode of “Welcome to Derry,” Hallorann is seen relaxing with his army buddies inside a tent that’s leaking due to the rain. After speaking with General Francis Shaw (played by James Remar), Shaw offers to improve Hallorann’s conditions. Hallorann then requests a secure and comfortable space for the soldiers to relax.
I’ve been reading about this place called The Black Spot, and it’s truly heartbreaking. It was a nightclub, a really important one, because it was a gathering place for Black soldiers during a difficult time. Apparently, Dick Hallorann worked in the kitchen there, and he, along with everyone else, experienced something awful. The club was tragically destroyed – burned to the ground by the Maine Legion of White Decency – but thankfully, Hallorann managed to get out.
Hallorann’s special ability, or “shine,” allowed him to escape the fire at the club and help others, including Mike Hanlon’s father. However, many people still perished. The fire was started by a group of white supremacists, but the evil entity known as “It” was also present, appearing to Hallorann and Mike’s father as a massive bird. This suggests that the dark history of Derry, and the horrors of that night, may be repeating themselves.
How The Black Spot Tragedy Will Impact It: Welcome To Derry
MovieStillsDB
The military is using Hallorann’s special ability to find where It hides. Until recently, in episode 3 of Welcome to Derry, Hallorann didn’t know exactly what he was searching for. But using his ability, he finally glimpsed inside It’s lair, where he saw a disturbing scene: a heap of floating bodies, Pennywise’s hiding place, and the clown’s glowing yellow eyes.
Hallorann doesn’t understand the creature’s powers or how it works, but the tragedy at the Black Spot will reveal the terrifying things they’re up against. While difficult to witness, this event is a crucial part of Derry’s dark past, and a turning point for both Hallorann and his involvement with It.
