Taye Diggs Stars In New Spy Drama After All American Exit

Taye Diggs is joining a new TV project after his role on All American, and he’s working again with the director of a very successful movie series that grossed over $100 million. Diggs was a key part of the original All American cast, playing the head football coach at Beverly Hills High. He discovers and recruits Spencer James (Daniel Ezra), the show’s main character, and their connection evolves throughout the five seasons.

Though his character, Billy Baker, died in a season 5 episode of the show, and even appeared briefly in a dream sequence, the series hasn’t felt the same since. Now, the actor known for How Stella Got Her Groove Back is taking on a new role and working with a director he’s collaborated with before.

According to Deadline, actor Aldis Hodge will lead the new NBC drama, Need To Know. The show is a spy thriller inspired by real-life events, centering on a seasoned CIA operative (Hodge) who must work with an ambitious young officer. Together, they lead the agency’s riskiest missions from a hidden location in South Florida.

Taye Diggs will be an executive producer on the project, teaming up again with Malcolm D. Lee. They previously worked together on the popular romantic comedy series The Best Man. Lee directed the original The Best Man film in 1999, which Spike Lee produced. The movie was a financial success, earning $34.9 million on a $9 million budget, and starred Diggs alongside Nia Long, Morris Chestnut, Harold Perrineau, Terrence Howard, Sanaa Lathan, Monica Calhoun, and featured Regina Hall’s first film role.

Lee will direct Need To Know, a project from his companies, Blackmaled Productions and Spycraft Entertainment. The first episode’s script was written by…

Alexander Maggio has worked on similar shows like Homeland and FBI. If the project is greenlit, Terence Paul Winter will write and executive produce, building on his experience with Boston Blue and the Blue Bloods spinoff.

The original cast is back for the Best Man sequel and the new series on Peacock, which has created a dedicated following. While Need To Know is a departure for Diggs into the spy genre, it promises to be an enjoyable role. If the show gets picked up after the pilot, there’s even a possibility he could work with a former co-star from All American – perhaps playing a confident, young agent.
