The movie It: Welcome to Derry includes a clever scene that feels like a satisfying nod to a famous moment in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining.
Like the series Castle Rock from 2018, It: Welcome to Derry offers a unique way to adapt Stephen King’s stories for television. Although it’s a prequel to the two It films, it doesn’t limit itself to that one story, instead borrowing characters and ideas from various other Stephen King books. A clear example of this is the inclusion of Dick Hallorann, a significant character from The Shining, as a central figure in the series.
Chris Chalk plays Dick Hallorann in It: Welcome to Derry, and while this version of the character is younger, he still has “the shining”—a psychic ability he also recognizes in Danny, just like in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. The new series cleverly references a conversation between Danny and Hallorann from the original film, specifically fulfilling a detail Hallorann shares about his own history and powers.
IT: Welcome To Derry Draws Another Major Dick Hallorann Connection To The Shining In Episode 3
Shortly after discovering Danny also possesses psychic abilities – referred to as “the shine” – Dick Hallorann has a private conversation with him in the Overlook Hotel’s kitchen. He hints that he shared this same ability with his grandmother, and could even communicate with her silently. This connection becomes surprisingly significant later on in Stephen King’s novel, IT: Welcome to Derry.
In the third episode of It: Welcome to Derry, Hallorann first comes face-to-face with Pennywise when his superiors send him to hunt the creature. Before he understands the danger, Pennywise begins to manipulate him, and Hallorann finds himself trapped. Luckily, the ghost of his grandmother appears and urges him to escape.
This scene clearly shows that even after her death, Hallorann can still connect with his grandmother through his psychic ability, known as “the shining.” Because “the shining” gives people various supernatural powers, this moment from IT: Welcome to Derry suggests that its reach goes far beyond simply reading minds or seeing the future.
The Shining Robbed Hallorann Of A Heroic Ending, But Welcome To Derry Is Giving Him The Story He Deserves
Many consider Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining to be one of the greatest horror films ever made, and that reputation is well-deserved. However, its faithfulness to Stephen King’s novel is often questioned. In fact, Stephen King himself acknowledges the film’s quality but feels it doesn’t do justice to his book. While King may be critical, it’s easy to see why. Kubrick took significant creative liberties with the story, making it a less-than-faithful adaptation.
This adaptation is an improvement over the original novel in several respects. However, a major flaw in The Shining was the way it handled Dick Hallorann. After setting him up as a mentor to Danny, the story unexpectedly killed him off without giving him a satisfying, heroic ending. Thankfully, It: Welcome to Derry is treating his character much better. Hallorann has already proven to be a key figure in the show, and his role will likely become even more significant as the story unfolds.
