While Jon Bernthal is well-known for playing The Punisher, he isn’t the only actor to take on the role of Frank Castle. Before Bernthal, Dolph Lundgren played the character in a 1989 film shown only outside the United States. Then, in 2004, Thomas Jane starred in a movie that critic Roger Ebert described as dark and depressing. Some fans even believe Ray Stevenson, who played the role in 2008, gave the best performance of all. Currently, you can stream two of these films – one on Tubi and another through the Internet Archive – but only one is truly worth watching.
Two free streaming services are currently offering both the original and the most recent Punisher films. While both movies feature the same character, they are very different in terms of how they look and feel. The late 1980s Punisher movie was made quickly, as Marvel needed to make money. Punisher: War Zone, however, was a passion project—a tribute to the character inspired by the darker Marvel Knights comics. Recently, the original Punisher film has gained renewed interest—Dolph Lundgren even revisited the role for a photoshoot in 2019. Unfortunately, War Zone hasn’t yet had its moment to shine.
The ’80s Version of ‘The Punisher’ Is Empty

Lundgren’s movie version of The Punisher is surprisingly well-made, but ultimately lacks substance. It begins with a thrilling explosion at a mobster’s house, and features non-stop action. However, the environments feel bland and uncreative, and the iconic skull logo is barely visible, appearing only as small details on Frank’s knives. The story depicts the mafia as being so crippled by The Punisher’s attacks that the Yakuza step in to take control, even kidnapping the families of mobsters to ensure obedience. This leads Frank to embark on a mission to save the innocent children.
Both The Punisher and War Zone are a bit over-the-top, but the 1980s version really pushes it. Dolph Lundgren’s Frank Castle fights Yakuza gangsters in silly locations like amusement parks, and the villain has an oddly peaceful hobby playing piano. The movie relies heavily on stereotypical mobsters, and it’s strange that a Yakuza headquarters would focus on sword training in a film about guns. Despite its flaws, the film does show Frank Castle’s inner turmoil effectively, and Lundgren portrays his remorse well. Ultimately, Mark Goldblatt’s version is a passable action movie, but it doesn’t quite succeed in making the character feel authentic.
Ray Stevenson Embodies a Violent Punisher in ‘War Zone’

Lionsgate
Even with four times the budget, War Zone doesn’t look significantly better than the last film. The computer-generated city environments actually detract from the experience. However, Ray Stevenson is a standout as the Marvel gunman, completely capturing the character’s confident and cold demeanor, which fits the more mature tone of Marvel Knights. The new film also features a more compelling villain – Jigsaw – replacing the random criminals from the previous movie, and adds a psychotic brother character to expand his story.
I really appreciate the clear vision Lexi Alexander brought to this movie. It definitely shares a ‘rescue mission’ theme with other Punisher stories, but it’s so much more brutal and uncompromising. Honestly, it’s filled with incredibly graphic violence – think disfigured faces and mutilated bodies appearing frequently. Both the Punisher and Jigsaw are completely uninhibited in their violence. Even though it’s clear the filmmakers were working with limited funds, they really tried to stay true to the spirit of the comics. It was great to see characters like Microchip (Wayne Knight nailed it!) and others pulled directly from various comic book storylines – you can tell everyone did their research. The over-the-top New York accents might be a little much for some, but I think they actually add to the film’s delightfully cheesy vibe.
If you’re looking for a good Punisher movie, Punisher: War Zone is the one to watch – it really captures the character’s dark and serious side while still being entertaining. Ray Stevenson’s performance feels similar to Jon Bernthal’s take on the role, making it a strong adaptation. The other versions, like the one starring Dolph Lundgren, just don’t live up to the potential of the character and feel a bit silly. Good news for fans: you can now watch Punisher: War Zone for free on Tubi, and the original Punisher film from 1989 is available to stream for free on the Internet Archive.
