With so many original TV shows available on Netflix, it’s hard to know where to start. But if you haven’t watched these three series, definitely add them to your list! Netflix began creating original content over ten years ago, starting with shows like House of Cards, Bloodline, and Narcos, and they’ve been consistently releasing new series ever since – many of which are still popular today.
Netflix releases a new original show almost every month, and with so many foreign-language series being added, it feels like the recommendations change constantly. While shows like Stranger Things and Wednesday become huge hits, many others quickly disappear and are forgotten.
Streaming TV moves quickly – shows need to attract viewers right away to survive, though occasionally a series will unexpectedly become popular later on. These three Netflix shows are all fantastic, and if you haven’t watched them yet, you really should.
Hellbound (2021-Present)
Many expected Hellbound to be as popular as Squid Game. This South Korean horror series is set on Earth, but with a terrifying twist: mysterious faces appear in the sky, announcing who will be dragged to Hell, either soon or at some point in the future.
Exactly when scheduled, three terrifying demons rise from Hell and kill a person, displaying overwhelming power. Over time, people have figured out how to profit from these horrific events, transforming the deadly displays into entertainment resembling game shows.
This show is genuinely creepy, bizarre, and often unexpectedly humorous. It explores our fascination with punishment and the darker side of human nature. The central mystery unfolds gradually, keeping you hooked with twists and shocking reveals.
Wild Wild Country (2018)
If you enjoy documentaries, especially those about cults or unique American stories, you won’t want to miss Wild Wild Country. This six-part series tells the fascinating and often shocking story of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, a controversial guru, and his close aide, Ma Anand Sheela. It’s considered one of the best documentary series of the last ten years.
The Rajneesh movement was a new religious group that became well-known in the United States during the 1980s. It began with the establishment of a community in Wasco County, Oregon, led by Indian philosopher and mystic, Rajneesh (also known as Osho). This community eventually incorporated as the city of Rajneeshpuram.
Growing conflict between the followers of a religious group and the residents of Wasco County quickly escalates into lawsuits, political clashes, and ultimately, biological attacks. Each episode of the documentary becomes increasingly shocking, and a particularly compelling storyline emerges about a division forming within the group’s leadership.
Master Of None (2015-2021)
Aziz Ansari’s show, Master of None, is a fantastic comedy-drama that deserves more viewers. The series follows Dev Shah, a 30-year-old actor in New York City, as he navigates life and searches for genuine happiness.
Aziz Ansari is joined by his close friend Arnold (Eric Wareheim), his friend Denise (Lena Waithe), and his actual parents, Shoukath and Fatima Ansari, who play his parents on the show. The second season of Master of None is largely set in Italy, and the third season shifts the focus to Denise, who is now a novelist.
Master of None is a hilarious Netflix series that balances comedy with genuine drama and storytelling. What sets it apart from similar shows is that it prioritizes making you laugh, while subtly weaving in deeper, thought-provoking ideas. It’s a smart, sweet, and genuinely charming show.
