Man steals bus and drives it 150 miles after  missing his ride home

You won’t believe this – I just heard about a guy who actually stole a bus! Apparently, his original bus was completely packed, so he just took matters into his own hands and drove a different one all the way to Dublin, Ireland! It’s insane!

Waiting for public transportation like buses or trains can be frustrating, particularly when they’re delayed. These delays can cause you to miss connections, be late for appointments, or even cancel your trip. It’s especially annoying when the bus or train finally arrives and is already overcrowded.

While passengers in the UK generally rely on official channels for refunds when their travel is delayed, Derek Dunne, who lives in Dublin, Ireland, decided to take a different approach.

In July 2023, 24-year-old Dunne was accused of stealing and driving a bus without the owner’s permission in Letterkenny, Ireland. He drove the bus to Dublin and then left it there.

According to The Journal and information from Bus Éireann, Dunne went to the bus depot, looked at several buses, and then selected one for his 150-mile trip.

Dunne explained to Irish police he’d originally intended to catch a later bus, but was informed it was full. As a result, he took a bus on his own.

A bus valued at approximately €390,000 was found abandoned on Sheriff Street in Dublin, with the keys left in the ignition. It wasn’t damaged in any way.

Dunne’s lawyers told the court that he was sorry for his actions, explaining he made the decision out of fear and not with a lack of concern for others.

The 24-year-old admitted guilt, but instead of going to jail for 18 months, he will be supervised by probation officers.

Judge John Aylmer described the crime as “highly unusual,” stemming from behavior he characterized as strange and peculiar.
