Mick Gordon, the well-known composer for video game music, has announced he’s creating the complete soundtrack for the new first-person shooter, Defect. This will be his first full game soundtrack in five years. Defect is a cyberpunk shooter with unique gameplay, and Gordon plans to create a truly cutting-edge musical score, using his trademark style of powerful, distorted sounds.
I’m really embracing the messed-up sounds in this project, almost as a way to go against the grain. I’m constantly trying to take things further, to see just how far I can push the limits of distortion. I’m exploring the extremes – how much can I warp the sound before it stops being music, and then finding a way to bring it back from the edge. It’s about finding that sweet spot where it’s still musical, but totally twisted.
Gordon explained he’s planning to use classic synthesizer sounds from the cyberpunk genre, but with his own unique approach. He wants the music to feel connected to the game’s dark, dystopian world, imagining the synthesizers as if they were physical, analog machines. He aims for a sound that feels vibrant and real, even within the bleak city environments of the game.
The soundtrack for Defect was surprisingly inspired by the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. Composer Mick Gordon specifically noted a track used during a scene with the Foot Clan that really stood out to him. This marks Gordon’s first complete soundtrack project since his work on Doom Eternal, which concluded his partnership with Id Software after a difficult split. However, he’s been actively working on other projects in the meantime.
Gordon was a key part of the music for Atomic Heart, and he also contributed to the soundtrack of Absolum, the recently released fantasy beat-’em-up from DotEmu. In addition to game music, he’s been working behind the scenes with several metal bands, handling production tasks.
