Several anime and toy franchises are being developed into live-action movies, and one project has been in discussion for a while. While it was announced to be starting production in February, there haven’t been many recent updates. Fortunately, when Joe Deckelmeier from MovieWeb spoke with , they shared a brief, positive update about the film’s progress.
There have been rumors for months that Sydney Sweeney would star in the film, and recently, Benson Boone was also reported to be joining the cast. When asked for an update, Sweeney simply stated:
“There is every single day.”
Although it’s not a lot of information, this confirms that Sweeney is still involved, and the project is progressing well. That should be enough to reassure fans for now.
The First Live-Action ‘Gundam’ Movie is Still A While Away

Warner Bros.
Back in 2018, Legendary, Bandai, and Namco teamed up to fund the first live-action film based on the popular franchise. But after the initial announcement, the project went quiet and wasn’t discussed much until recently.
This popular franchise currently includes 25 anime series, 34 animated movies, and 27 original animated productions. It also boasts a very successful toy line, generating around $1 billion in revenue each year. In February, the three companies involved released a joint statement saying:
We’ll be sharing more details as soon as everything is confirmed. The original Mobile Suit Gundam, which first aired in 1979, revolutionized robot anime. Unlike earlier shows that focused on clear heroes and villains, Gundam presented a realistic portrayal of war, explored scientific concepts in detail, and featured complex human stories. It treated robots not as simple helpers, but as powerful weapons called ‘mobile suits,’ and became incredibly popular.
Sweeney is counting on the upcoming Gundam movie to turn things around after a tough year at the box office. Her new sports biopic, Christy, had a very poor opening weekend, earning only $1.25 million – one of the lowest totals ever for a film released in over 2,000 theaters. Given the dedicated fanbase of the Gundam series, the movie is expected to be a big hit when it’s finally released.
Currently, the only thing available for the upcoming movie, directed by Jim Mickle (the showrunner of Sweet Tooth), is a poster. We don’t yet know when it will be released or when filming will begin.
