President of PR firm arrested for stealing 9 rare Pokemon cards worth $52,000

Police in Tokyo have arrested the head of a public relations company for allegedly stealing nine valuable Pokemon cards, totaling around $52,000, while visiting a card shop for business.

According to investigators, Tatsuki Haneda went to a Tokyo trading card shop in August to photograph products for promotional purposes. Employees gave him a keycard to access the storage room where valuable Pokemon cards were stored.

Haneda completed filming, but then said he’d left something behind. He used his key to go back inside and stole nine trading cards before leaving the store.

PR firm boss allegedly sold stolen Pokemon cards for $29,000

Haneda has confessed to stealing the cards, explaining to police that he needed money and had been told by coworkers that some of them were worth a lot. The most valuable card he took was worth around $16,300.

Police say Haneda sold several of the stolen cards the very next day for nearly $29,000.

This isn’t the first time someone famous has been involved in a crime related to Pokémon cards. Just this year, a company executive in Singapore went to jail after deceiving his boss out of $500,000, which he then spent on Pokémon cards and other expensive items.

2025 has already seen some strange events. For example, a man wearing a Spider-Man costume burglarized a game store and stole $10,000 worth of collectible trading cards like Pokemon and Dragon Ball.
