The first five minutes of Season 5 of Stranger Things have been released, and they finally reveal the answer to a question fans have had since the very beginning of the show.
Okay, so we’re getting to the very end of Stranger Things! Part 1 of the final season is coming out later this month, and then we’ll get the last episodes in December. I’m seriously hyped to see how it all wraps up!
Yesterday was celebrated as ‘Stranger Things Day’ to remember the beginning of the show – specifically, the day Will Byers disappeared on November 6, 1983. That event set everything in motion for the sci-fi series.
To build excitement, Netflix released the first five minutes of Season 5 online, showing viewers exactly what happened to Will after he went missing…
Vecna was controlling Will from the start

The video starts with Will singing a song by The Clash while settling into ‘Castle Byers’ in the eerie Upside Down. His singing is suddenly cut short when a Demogorgon appears, and Will quickly shoots at it.
This doesn’t really help, and the monster continues to pursue Byers, forcing him to climb a tree. He falls and is knocked unconscious, which is bad news because the creature then pulls him to a hideout belonging to Vecna.
The show’s main villain announces, ‘At long last, we can begin!’ just as a tentacle clamps over Will’s mouth. He continues, speaking to Will by name, ‘We’re going to do wonderful things together. Beautiful things.’
It turns out Vecna has been connected to Will’s mind since the start, confirming a popular fan theory that’s been widely discussed on Reddit.
So, I was reading Reddit, and someone pointed out something huge – it sounds like the Mind Flayer piece inside Will wasn’t just a random thing, it was put there on purpose. And honestly, I think that’s the biggest thing we learned from that scene. It totally changes how you look at everything!
We always understood he’d been severely wounded and then brought back to life later, likely while he was trapped in the Upside Down. What’s new—and has now been confirmed after being just a theory—is that Vecna specifically targeted Will from the very start.
The video has sparked a lot of discussion, with one viewer speculating about why Will was originally taken. They wonder if the creatures might be trying to abduct children again in the upcoming season, similar to what happened with Will, and what their overall goal could be.
Someone else wondered why Vecna would send spies to the real world but not retrieve them himself. They pointed out that Vecna seemed to know Will would be saved, and questioned why he didn’t just send people through the gross, vine-like tunnels and then send them back home. They also noted that the longer someone stays in the Upside Down, the sicker they become, and could eventually end up like Barb – deteriorating and unable to return.
The way this part of the show connects back to earlier moments is really impressive. Many viewers have rewatched the scene where Joyce and Hopper find Will countless times, and finding out it was Vecna all along is a huge surprise. People are excited about where the story is going.

Many people are now even more impressed with Will’s character. One person commented on his bravery, saying it was incredible to imagine being chased by that creature and then jumping to another tree. They also expressed sadness, noting that the storyline seems to confirm Will is now possessed. Others clarified that he’s ‘possessed’ rather than simply ‘evil’.
Fans are excited about what the new trailer suggests, with many believing Vecna was the villain all along and predicting the next season will be amazing.
Many viewers are hoping Will makes it through the final season, feeling he’s already faced enough hardship.
