Sony Pictures and Nintendo have started filming the live-action Legend of Zelda movie. According to the Film & Television Industry Alliance, production began on November 4th and is expected to continue until April 7, 2026.
Filming is currently underway in Wellington, New Zealand, continuing the city’s tradition as a popular location for big fantasy films. Previous productions shot there include ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ ‘The Hobbit,’ and ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’.
Bo Bragason will play Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will be Link in the upcoming Zelda movie. The film is being produced by Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo and Avi Arad, known for his work with Marvel. Wes Ball, who directed the Maze Runner films, is directing, and Derek Connolly—who has written for Star Wars, Jurassic World, and Pokemon: Detective Pikachu—is writing the script.
Despite rumors, Nintendo’s next film won’t be based on Zelda. They’re working with Illumination again on The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, planned for 2026, following the massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023. A Zelda movie is scheduled for 2027, and Nintendo intends to release several more films in the years to come.
I’m really excited because after the Super Mario Bros. Movie, the next big video game adaptation coming out is Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s – and it’s hitting theaters this December! I’ve been following the updates, and it looks like it’s going to be a spooky one.
The latest Zelda game, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, is now available on the Switch 2.
