I was so excited to hear that the Chinese astronauts actually cooked chicken wings and steak on the China Space Station! New video from the Astronaut Center of China shows astronauts on the Shenzhou-20 and Shenzhou-21 missions cooking a meal together. They spent about 28 minutes grilling food before enjoying it as a group. This cooking setup is part of a larger plan to make life more comfortable for astronauts in space.
According to the Aerospace Control Center, the oven was created to give Chinese astronauts fresh, hot meals in space. It’s designed to bake without smoke or oil, keeping the air clean on the station. It successfully completed tests for temperature control, collecting food scraps, and filtering high heat, and is certified to work for 500 cooking sessions.
This latest development builds on earlier attempts to cook in space, such as baking chocolate chip cookies on the International Space Station in 2020. The Chinese device cooks faster than the ISS version because it was designed for regular, everyday use, not just scientific testing.
China expands its space kitchen
Astronauts on the Shenzhou-21 mission will have a much wider variety of food to choose from – 190 items in total! This includes fresh produce, treats like cakes, nuts, and even meat, allowing them to cook and bake while in space. The current Shenzhou-20 crew is scheduled to return to Earth on November 5th, passing control of the space station to the Shenzhou-21 team.
NASA is under increasing pressure from politicians and researchers to share information about the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS. This push for transparency comes after the agency’s acting administrator publicly addressed a question about it from Kim Kardashian on X (formerly Twitter).
