Disney Reportedly Rebooting Classic Animated Movie With a Twist

Disney reportedly has plans to reboot one of its classic animated movies.

I’ve been following Disney’s trend of remaking their animated classics into live-action films, and it’s been interesting to see how they’re doing. While the live-action Snow White didn’t do amazingly well at the box office earlier this year, Lilo & Stitch totally surprised everyone! It was a massive success, earning over a billion dollars worldwide and is now the second-highest-grossing movie of 2025, which is incredible.

What animated movie is Disney reportedly rebooting?

Disney is reportedly developing a new movie called ‘Aurora,’ a fresh take on the classic ‘Sleeping Beauty’ story. Sources say this version will be set in Mexico instead of the original’s 14th-century European setting.

We don’t have any official confirmation yet. Right now, talk of a movie based on Aurora is just a rumor, as Disney hasn’t made any announcements about it.

If this project moves forward, it won’t be the first time Disney has revisited the story of Sleeping Beauty. Back in 2014, the studio released a live-action film called Maleficent, which told the story from the perspective of the villain. Angelina Jolie played Maleficent, and Ella Fanning played Aurora.

A sequel to Maleficent, titled Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, came out in 2019. Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning returned to play their characters, and the film also stars Michelle Pfeiffer as Queen Ingrate, Sam Riley as Diaval, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Conall, Ed Skrein as Borra, and Harris Dickinson as Prince Philip.

Disney announced plans for a third Maleficent movie in December 2023, but there hasn’t been much news since. In March 2025, the writer, Linda Woolverton, confirmed the project was still being worked on. Whether Maleficent 3 will actually be made depends on if the planned Aurora movie gets produced.

You can currently watch Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent, and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil on Disney+.
