When Squid Game premiered on Netflix, it became a global sensation. Its popularity led to the creation of a reality competition series called Squid Game: The Challenge.
Similar to previous versions, everyday people compete in a set of challenges. However, instead of facing deadly consequences for losing, contestants who fail are simply removed from the competition and sent home.
Since it’s the second season, some competitors tried to prepare beforehand, thinking they knew what challenges would be repeated. However, that strategy didn’t work out. Be aware that spoilers follow…
Squid Game: The Challenge contestants trained for a game that isn’t in Season 2
The ‘Red Light, Green Light’ game is likely the most well-known challenge from both the original ‘Squid Game’ and the reality competition, ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’.
The TV show is based on a well-known children’s game. Players try to move across a room while a large robot doll watches them. If the doll says “green light,” they can continue moving. But when it shouts “red light,” everyone must freeze. If the doll sees anyone moving, that player is eliminated.
Identical twins Jacob and Raul Gibson, known as Players 431 and 432, thought the competition would begin with the same game as Squid Game: The Challenge Season 1. However, the show actually started with a completely different game called The Count.
Raul explained to Radio Times that after seeing the first game in Season 1 be ‘Red Light, Green Light,’ he naturally expected the same game to reappear, as it was so well-known.
Walking into the room was unexpected, and the first challenge was surprisingly difficult. It wasn’t what we anticipated at all, but it helped us concentrate on the present moment.
Jacob explained that the team practiced the Red Light, Green Light game so intensely that they forgot to eat or drink beforehand. He felt their preparation was excessive, saying it felt like a lot of wasted effort.
What happened to Jacob and Raul?
Both Jacob and Raul survived the first round of Squid Game: The Challenge, though Raul barely made it. However, they were both eliminated during Game 3.
The twins signed up to play in the first game of Season 2, and were surprised to learn they’d both been chosen as team captains – and would be competing against each other.
Jacob’s team won, advancing him to the next round. Raul’s team lost, eliminating them from the competition, but Raul received a special chance to continue because he volunteered as captain. Secretly, Raul eliminated three other players during the initial challenge to secure his own spot.
Things got tough after a while, and honestly, we all knew Raul was a big threat. He ended up getting voted out during a Russian doll challenge – it was close, but his opponent got more votes. Then, during Game 3, which was called ‘Mingle,’ Jacob’s game sadly came to an end too.
