As a big fan of Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman movies, I was really curious to hear what she thought about directing another superhero film. She directed the first one back in 2017, and then Wonder Woman 1984 a few years later. Apparently, she was already working on a third Wonder Woman movie, but sadly, that project was canceled when James Gunn and Peter Safran took over at DC Studios. They have a new vision for the DC universe, so they decided to go in a different direction. It’s a shame, but it sounds like she’s open to other superhero projects in the future!
In an interview with Marvel Cinematic Universe News (as reported by Comic Book), director Patty Jenkins was asked about potentially returning to superhero films, specifically mentioning the upcoming DCU Wonder Woman reboot and the Paradise Lost prequel series. While she expressed her continued love for Wonder Woman, Jenkins stated she’s currently focused on new projects and enjoying the change of pace. She enjoyed her time making superhero movies and hasn’t ruled out returning in the future, but is happy with what she’s doing now.

After James Gunn and Peter Safran decided against her planned ending to the Wonder Woman story, it’s doubtful Patty Jenkins will direct a Wonder Woman reboot or any future DCU film. Jenkins is clearly passionate about superhero movies – she was originally set to direct Thor: The Dark World before leaving over creative disagreements. Given how much both she and Marvel Studios have evolved, she might consider returning to the MCU or developing a new superhero project with companies like Image or Dark Horse.
Beyond her work on superhero films, Jenkins is also developing a Star Wars movie called Rogue Squadron. Announced in December 2020, the film faced delays because of issues with the script and Jenkins’ other projects, including Wonder Woman 3. In 2023, she confirmed she had re-signed with Lucasfilm, but it’s currently unknown if Rogue Squadron will ever be released. Lucasfilm’s current Star Wars plans include The Mandalorian & Grogu in 2026 and a film called Starfighter in 2027.
James Gunn is planning a fresh start for Wonder Woman within the DC Universe. The script is being written by Ana Nugueira, who also worked on Supergirl, and the movie could potentially come out in 2027 or 2028. Wonder Woman’s backstory is already connected to the DCU, thanks to the appearance of the villain Circe in Creature Commandos. Several actresses, including Adria Arjona (Andor) and Alexandra Daddario (The White Lotus), have been mentioned by fans as potential choices to play the new Wonder Woman.
