Warning! This review contains major spoilers for Only Murders in the Building season 5, episode 10.
The season 5 finale of Only Murders in the Building neatly resolves the murder of Lester Coluca, hinting at a new case for the podcasting team – possibly even abroad. What stood out most this season was how the show treated the Arconia building itself as a central character, not just a location. It felt like a living, breathing community – from the residents to the staff – and everyone was determined to protect it.
I was definitely relieved to see The Arconia escape Camila White’s (Renée Zellweger) subtle schemes and bland decorating in the final episode of season 5, “The House Always…” But honestly, I was a bit disappointed by who turned out to be Lester’s (Teddy Coluca) killer. It felt similar to a problem I had with the season 4 finale of Only Murders – the reasons behind the killings just aren’t very surprising anymore.

I didn’t really think Keegan-Michael Key’s character, Mayor Tillman, was the killer – though I did enjoy seeing Mabel chop off his fake finger! But the idea of a corrupt politician being the culprit feels a little predictable. It makes sense, given this season’s theme of greedy and dishonest people, like the billionaires and the old-fashioned mob. However, is simple greed the most compelling reason for this murder? It feels similar to what happened with Sazz Pataki in season four, where greed was also the main motive.
As a true cinema devotee, I’ve always appreciated a good villain, but this season really showed me how far people will go for money. Honestly, seeing characters like Lester—who, it turns out, was technically responsible for Nicky’s death—made Mabel, Charles, and Oliver look like absolute saints! It wasn’t just about poking fun at billionaires and their wealth, either. It felt like a really pointed commentary on what’s happening in the world right now, and that really struck a chord with me.
Despite the surprising reveal of Mayor Tillman’s true nature in season 5, episode 10 – similar to the Marshall P. Pope reveal in season 4 – the moment doesn’t really resonate emotionally. It feels a long way from the impact of season 1, when Charles discovered his girlfriend was a dangerous killer. This time around, the Only Murders in the Building crew quickly brushes it off and focuses on their next case, which just happens to arrive right away.
Despite some issues, the finale had a lot going for it. I especially liked how it tied up loose ends, like the meaning of Lester’s last text and Charles’ surprising climbing skills. I also appreciated that Jay Pflug, played by Logan Lerman, didn’t suddenly become a hero; even he admits he’s flawed. Mabel did help him take a small step toward being better by revealing what he and his friends did, though it’s unlikely any of the three billionaire suspects will face serious consequences.
Even though the mystery wasn’t the most satisfying, it didn’t ruin my overall enjoyment of the show. Only Murders in the Building is a murder mystery, but it’s also about so much more, and this season really shows that. As long as the show keeps things interesting, funny, and focuses on the friendship between Mabel, Charles, and Oliver, it’s always a fun watch. Sometimes, sticking to what works is a good thing.
And The Next Only Murders In The Building Victim Is…
A typical season finale of Only Murders in the Building introduces the next victim, and this one does too. Just like last season, the hint of what’s to come overshadows the current season’s ending, making the showdown between Cooper, Mabel, and Charles – and everyone in the building – feel a bit hurried. Still, it was surprisingly fun to see Tina Fey, with a bright red curly wig, as the latest victim right outside The Arconia.
It’s interesting how this connects back to Lester’s case. He put his faith in Oliver, Charles, and Mabel to figure out who killed him, and now it seems Cinda Canning – their podcasting competitor – has the same trust in them to solve her murder.
I’m a bit unsure about the idea of Only Murders in the Building moving to London, even though plenty of great British actors could fit right in. However, I’m happy the show’s next victim is someone with a history with the main characters – that should lead to some really compelling storylines and character development.
Overall, this season of Only Murders in the Building was fantastic. I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens next – especially with the new characters hinted at in the finale – and watching Charles, Mabel, and Oliver stumble their way through another funny and complex mystery. Hopefully, the show gets renewed!
