It: Welcome To Derry Star Praises Improved Indigenous Representation Over Films

Kimberly Guerrero, a well-known actress, highlighted a strong point of the new HBO show, noting it improves upon the previous movies. The series, adapted from Stephen King’s novel, acts as a backstory to the 2017 and 2019 It films, detailing how the terrifying Pennywise the Clown began his reign of terror in Derry, Maine, in 1962.

In a recent interview with Parade, actress Javon ‘Jay’ Guerrero, who plays Rose, shared her excitement about the inclusion of Indigenous representation in the upcoming Welcome to Derry series. This was something missing from the two previous movies. She described it as both ‘an honor and a responsibility’ to bring authentic Indigenous stories, history, and people to the screen, highlighting the importance of showing their presence, love, and experiences.

Rose is believed to have strong ties to the Native American legends connected to the town of Derry and its past. It’s currently unclear what role she’ll play in Pennywise’s return, but it’s expected to be significant.

For the first time in the Welcome to Derry series, Native American actors are being included in the cast. Previous films in the franchise hadn’t featured any Native American performers or characters in significant roles. While this wasn’t a specific point of criticism before, the portrayal of Mike Hanlon, one of the few Black characters, did receive some negative feedback.

Mike faced criticism for how his character and history were altered, but the show appears to be addressing these concerns. Recent trailers suggest that the underlying racism present in the town of Derry will be a significant and openly explored element of the story this season, rather than being avoided.

Although Mike Hanlon isn’t in Welcome to Derry, the show is clearly making an effort to include more diverse characters. The cast also includes Joshua Odjick, Mikkal Karim Fidler, Jack Molloy Legault, Jovan Adepo, Amanda Christine, Chad Rook, Clara Stack, and James Remar. Bill Skarsgård returns as the terrifying Pennywise.

Critics have mostly reacted positively to the new HBO series. Zach Moser of ScreenRant gave it a 7 out of 10 in his review, specifically praising the actors and performances. He especially highlighted Chris Chalk’s portrayal of Dick Hallorann.

The introduction of Dick Hallorann (played by Chris Chalke) is jarring, much like when Scatman Crothers first appeared as the same character in Kubrick’s The Shining. Chalke delivers a brilliant performance, portraying Hallorann as confident and friendly, yet subtly hinting at a troubled past through his intense, wide-eyed gaze – a man who’s witnessed things he shouldn’t have.

It’s still unknown how the public will react to It: Welcome to Derry, but the show clearly builds upon the world Stephen King created in some new and exciting ways. According to Guerrero, viewers can definitely look forward to seeing more Indigenous characters and stories.
