Patrick Swayze had a rare ability to look effortlessly cool. He starred in many beloved movies from the 80s and 90s, playing memorable, tough characters that people still admire today. Roles like James Dalton, Bodhi, and Johnny Castle were incredibly cool, and it always made me wonder… did he wear underwear under all those outfits?
I’ve been giving some thought to the main characters in movies like Road House, Point Break, and Dirty Dancing, and it seems unlikely they’d bother with underwear. Here’s my reasoning.

Johnny Castle (Dirty Dancing)
Johnny Castle, the dancer in Dirty Dancing, is a rugged, free-spirited character who doesn’t seem like the type to wear underwear. He’s more of a hardworking, effortlessly cool guy – reminiscent of a character from The Outsiders – and probably wouldn’t bother with something so fussy, or even washing it! He embodies the cool vibe of this iconic 80s movie, famous for its unforgettable music.

James Dalton (Road House)
Patrick Swayze often played incredibly charismatic characters, and his role as James Dalton in Road House is arguably his most tough and cool. It’s clear Dalton isn’t concerned with conventional underwear – in fact, it’s hard to imagine anyone in the movie, even Terry Funk, is wearing briefs or boxers!

Bodhi (Point Break)
Bodhi, the main character in Point Break, is too busy surfing and robbing banks to worry about something like underwear. He’s constantly in action – enjoying beach scenes and pulling off heists – and wouldn’t let something as trivial as laundry distract him.

Truman Gates (Next Of Kin)
You might not be familiar with Next of Kin, a surprisingly good action movie from 1989 with Patrick Swayze and Liam Neeson. Swayze plays Truman Gates, an ex-Army Ranger who traded his upbringing in the Appalachian mountains for a life as a Chicago police officer. Considering his background, it’s unlikely Truman would choose to wear underwear – he probably owned some, but wouldn’t wear them by choice. The same goes for Neeson’s character, Briar Gates.

Darry Curtis (The Outsiders)
As someone who watches Darry in The Outsiders, it just doesn’t seem like he has a moment to think about things like underwear! He’s constantly looking after his brothers, Ponyboy and Sodapop. I get he needs them, especially with his job and everything, but the greasers aren’t exactly known for following all the rules, you know?

Jed Eckert (Red Dawn)
Considered a deeply patriotic American film – and directed by John Milius – Red Dawn is full of strong, memorable characters. Leading the charge is Jed Eckert, a young hero who inspires the Wolverines to fight back against invading Soviet-led forces using guerilla tactics. While anyone can be a patriot, the film understandably focuses on the intense, practical challenges of resisting an occupation, leaving little time for personal comforts while hiding in the mountains and planning a defense of their town and country.

Pecos Bill (Tall Tale)
Do you remember the 1995 movie Tall Tale? It’s a fun, but often overlooked, film from the ‘90s where Patrick Swayze plays Pecos Bill, a legendary cowboy. He teams up with other characters from American folklore to help a boy protect his town. Given that Pecos Bill is a larger-than-life figure from the Wild West, boxer briefs just don’t seem like something he’d wear – maybe an old-fashioned long-underwear suit, but even that’s a stretch!
I hope you had some fun with this silly and completely pointless look at whether fictional characters wear underwear!
