Today at the Halo World Championships, Microsoft and Halo Studios revealed Halo: Campaign Evolved, a remake of the original 2001 Halo game. They’re calling it a faithful update with modern improvements. It’s scheduled to launch in 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and will be available through Xbox Game Pass. Importantly, this version focuses solely on the campaign; it won’t include traditional multiplayer modes, but it will let you play the campaign with friends online or locally.
This remake, built with the powerful Unreal Engine 5, will feature significantly improved graphics and smoother gameplay. You’ll also be able to play online with up to three friends. Halo Studios has added three brand new missions, plus a wider variety of weapons, vehicles, and enemies. Here’s a complete overview of what we know about the updated game.
“Reborn” visuals
Halo Studios is promising a suite of updates and upgrades to the classic game.
The game features the classic missions, completely revamped with better level design, updated cutscenes, and easier navigation. These improvements speed up the gameplay while still capturing the excitement, suspense, and heroic moments of the original.
Okay, so Halo is getting a serious glow-up! The environments are completely rebuilt with amazing new graphics and cutscenes – it’s like seeing everything for the first time. They’ve also remastered the music, which should make the whole experience way more immersive. The best part? The original voice actors – Steve Downes as Master Chief and Jen Taylor as Cortana – are back and recorded new dialogue for the remake. I’m super hyped to hear them again!

Sprint
The upcoming remake of Halo: Combat Evolved will include sprinting, a feature absent from the original game. While some fans appreciate the slower pace of the early Halo titles and may not like this change, others are excited to see a more modern gameplay experience. Fortunately, players will have the option to turn sprinting off if they prefer the classic feel.
New guns and prequel missions
The Halo: Combat Evolved remake will add nine new weapons, including the Energy Sword – previously only used by enemies – now available for players. The game will also feature new prequel missions starring Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson, telling a brand-new story that happens before the original game’s events.
As a huge Halo fan, I’m really excited about this update! Now, we can actually steal enemy vehicles – something you couldn’t do in the original game. They’ve added the ability to drive the Wraith, which was a feature that first showed up in Halo 2, and it’s awesome!
The game will also include a “campaign remix” mode, letting players replay missions with customizable challenges – called Skulls – that change things up, like the weapons and enemies you’ll encounter.
The Halo: Combat Evolved remake lets you play with a friend locally on consoles using split-screen, or with up to four players online. You can also play with friends on both consoles and PC, and your progress carries over between platforms.

Not the first remake
In 2011, Microsoft re-released the original Halo: Combat Evolved for Xbox 360 as Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. This version featured improved graphics and allowed players to compete online. A unique feature let players instantly switch between the updated and original graphics with a single button press.
This game is part of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which bundles together six different Halo games. The collection includes not only the updated version of the original Halo, but also Halo 2: Anniversary, complete with both its story campaign and multiplayer modes.
No Switch 2
There’s been a lot of talk about Microsoft possibly releasing Halo on both the PlayStation 5 and the new Switch 2 console. Today, Microsoft announced some gaming plans, but didn’t mention the Switch 2 at all. Fans of Call of Duty are still hoping to see a new game on the Switch 2, as Microsoft and Activision have repeatedly said they intend to bring the franchise to the platform eventually.
Not the only new Halo game
Besides the upcoming Halo: Campaign Evolved, Microsoft is reportedly developing another Halo game that will be a continuously updated live service. While they didn’t discuss this today, Microsoft has previously stated they have several new Halo titles in development. With the Halo series celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2026, this live-service game is expected to launch next year alongside Halo: Campaign Evolved.
