As the PlayStation 5 approaches its five-year anniversary this November, talk about the next PlayStation console is picking up. Sony and AMD have recently highlighted new technologies they’re developing, and Shuhei Yoshida, a former head of PlayStation Studios, has shared his ideas about the PS6. He believes Sony needs to focus on more than just improved graphics when designing the next generation of consoles.
In a recent podcast interview, PlayStation’s Hiroki Yoshida discussed the limitations of simply increasing graphical power in new consoles. He explained that current hardware is reaching its peak, and to appeal to a broader audience, PlayStation needs to explore options beyond just better graphics. Yoshida believes focusing solely on high-end visuals may only attract a limited number of players, and a change in strategy may be necessary.
Yoshida isn’t sure how he’d make the PS6 special, but he’s confident the current PlayStation leadership, headed by CEO Hideaki Nishino, will innovate in a significant way. He believes their relative youth and fresh perspective, compared to previous leaders, will allow them to truly disrupt the gaming industry.
It’s still unclear exactly what the next PlayStation (PS6) will be like, but reports suggest Sony is thinking about offering a removable disc drive – just like the option available for the current PS5 Pro Digital Edition and standard PS5 Pro. Sony also plans to continue running games directly from physical discs or installed on the console’s SSD, rather than relying on cloud technology. They’re prioritizing powerful hardware for this aspect of the console’s design.
Microsoft, competing with Sony, is planning a new Xbox with impressive capabilities to attract gamers. Xbox President Sarah Bond has hinted at a premium, carefully selected experience for players.
