Okay, so James Gunn’s new DC Universe is looking pretty good so far! But everyone’s buzzing because, after he said we won’t be seeing Darkseid, a lot of us think another iconic villain is actually going to be the main bad guy. It’s got the whole fandom trying to figure out who it could be!
Gunn explained to New Rockstars that using Darkseid as the main villain isn’t ideal at the moment. He feels it’s too close to Thanos from Marvel, and Zack Snyder already presented a compelling version of the character in his films.
This is a really good move. Focusing on developing new characters first is key. Upcoming films include ‘Supergirl’ in June 2026 and ‘Clayface’ in September 2026. Following those, James Gunn plans to start production on ‘Man of Tomorrow’ in July 2027, featuring Superman (David Corenswet) and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) working together to face a major new enemy.
It seems likely this larger danger will be the main villain of the DC Universe, and fans believe they know who it will be, as Darkseid won’t be used for that role.
Fans think Brainiac is coming to the DCU

Ever since James Gunn showed off the script for the upcoming Superman movie – which featured a brain on the cover – fans have been guessing that the villain Brainiac will appear in the DC Universe.
After James Gunn suggested they wouldn’t be using Darkseid, many fans on Reddit now believe Brainiac will be the primary villain introduced in the new DC Universe.
One fan described the villain as the only logical choice, explaining that he’s the level of threat the heroes need. They reasoned that Darkseid and Doomsday are too specific to the larger storyline, and Lex Luthor simply isn’t powerful enough to be the main antagonist of an epic saga.
I’m really hoping Brainiac is the main villain! It’s just my opinion, but I think he’d be perfect. I’ve seen a lot of other DC fans on X saying the same thing – one person even called him the “one correct choice!” Another fan admitted Brainiac is just a more interesting villain overall, and honestly, I agree!
This character hails from the planet Colu and is a highly intelligent cyborg obsessed with gathering all the knowledge in the universe. To do this, he raids civilizations, shrinks their biggest city down to miniature size, and keeps it contained within a bottle inside his spaceship, which is shaped like a skull. He then destroys the rest of the planet.
Some stories suggest Superman actually caused the destruction of his home planet, Krypton. This gives him a powerful and menacing background, making him a believable candidate to be the main villain in the DC Universe.
