Netflix Could Buy Mortal Kombat, Hogwarts Legacy Owner, Warner Bros. Discovery

Warner Bros. Discovery has revealed more details about potential changes, including the possibility of being broken up and sold. The company, which owns popular game franchises like Mortal Kombat, Batman, and Harry Potter, announced today that it has received offers from several interested buyers for either the entire company or just the Warner Bros. portion.

While no specific companies were publicly identified, recent reports suggest several potential bidders for Warner Bros. Discovery. Bloomberg News stated that Paramount made an offer of $20 per share, but Warner Bros. Discovery turned it down. CNBC also mentioned that Netflix and Comcast could be interested. Netflix is already heavily involved in gaming and is continuing to expand in that area, learning from past challenges.

Warner Bros. Discovery stated its board will consider all possible options for the future, including revisiting the previously announced plan to sell the company completely or divide it into separate sales and spin-offs.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is looking for potential buyers to maximize the company’s value. According to board chair Samuel A. Di Piazza Jr., the company still plans to split into two separate media companies, but they are also open to exploring other options to get the best possible price for their assets.

Warner Bros. Discovery hasn’t said when it will finish its latest review of options, including potential changes to its earlier plan. That original plan was expected to be finished by mid-2026, but it’s not certain if it will actually happen.

Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) announced another price increase for HBO Max today, marking the third hike in just three years. Meanwhile, WBD’s stock is performing very well, rising over 10% today.

Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) is concentrating its gaming efforts on its most profitable franchises. Rocksteady, the studio behind Batman: Arkham Knight, is developing a new single-player Batman game. WB Games Montreal is reportedly working on a Game of Thrones title, and Avalanche Software is likely creating a full sequel to Hogwarts Legacy. The Mortal Kombat series will also continue with new games from NetherRealm. While DC has some exciting projects in the works, according to studio head James Gunn, they won’t be released for a while.

We know one game that’s confirmed: Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, developed by Traveller’s Tales and scheduled for release in 2026. For Mortal Kombat fans, Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection arrives October 30th, though it’s published by Atari, not Warner Bros. Unfortunately, a Wonder Woman game has been canceled, and the studio working on it, Monolith, has been closed. Warner Bros. Discovery also shut down Player First Games and WB San Diego earlier this year.

Warner Bros. Discovery executives stated that the huge popularity of Hogwarts Legacy has proven they can once again create excellent, long-lasting games. They anticipate their video game business will be profitable again in 2025 and become a key driver of the company’s growth in the future.

David Haddad, who has led Warner Bros.’ gaming division for many years, revealed in January that he’s stepping down. He will remain with the company for a period to ensure a smooth handover.
