The ROG Ally X and the standard ROG Ally handheld gaming PCs are now available for purchase, but they come with a high price tag. The Ally X costs $1,000, while the base model is $600, making them inaccessible to some gamers. In a recent interview, Xbox president Sarah Bond explained that the pricing was set by the manufacturer, Asus, and that Microsoft believes the cost aligns with the devices’ features and performance.
We focused on giving people choices, and Asus was key to that, as they designed the hardware. They used their understanding of the market, desired features, and what customers would pay to set the final prices. The response was incredible – the device sold out quickly on the Xbox Store and at many retailers worldwide. Based on the positive reception, I’m confident we’re offering gamers excellent value for the price.
Bond explained that strong pre-launch sales confirmed Microsoft’s vision for gaming: making it as accessible and enjoyable as any other form of entertainment, playable on any device, anywhere. He stated, “The goal is to let you play any game, with any player, on any device.”
The Xbox ROG Ally has received a somewhat mixed response. While reviewers acknowledge its impressive technology, they’ve noted issues with the software. As Tamoor Hussain from TopMob put it, the Ally and Ally X could be a good fit for some, but handheld gaming devices generally need to offer a lot to appeal to a wider audience.
The ROG Ally X is currently available at Best Buy with immediate shipping. If you’re looking for a more affordable option, the standard ROG Ally is in stock at Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, and directly from Asus.
