If you’re still yearning for more content from Khara Studio following the conclusion of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, here’s some exciting news! The animation studio has shared that they will reveal a new animated short at Japan Expo in Paris, France. On July 4th, 2025, between 11:00 and 11:30 CST, there will be a 30-minute presentation by the studio on the Yuzu Stage at Japan Expo. Animator Yusuke Matsui, who contributed to the CG scenes in the Rebuild of Evangelion, will be part of the panel during this presentation.
At Japan Expo, Khara is set to present a panel soon following their last project, “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX”. This latest Gundam installment was produced jointly with Bandai Namco Filmworks and aired from April to June this year, spanning twelve episodes. Notably, the team behind Khara Studio includes the same individuals who worked on the original “Neon Genesis Evangelion” anime, including its main director Hideaki Anno. Many of the creators from “Evangelion”, including Anno, also contributed to “Gundam GQuuuuuuX”, resulting in certain resemblances between the two series. Interestingly, there will be a Gundam Rising event at Anime Expo in the U.S., focusing on “Gundam GQuuuuuuX” around the same time as Japan Expo.
What Will The Short from Studio Khara be About?
I am thrilled to share that on July 4th (Monday), from 11:00-11:30 CEST / 18:00-18:30 JST, I’ll be taking the stage at Japan Expo 2025 in Paris! Studio Color’s very own Yusuke Matsui will be there to present our latest short anime creation. Don’t miss it! #JapanExpo2025

Khara hasn’t revealed the topic of its upcoming animated short, but it will continue to innovate in animation and offer top-quality content to global viewers. Japan Expo attendees will get a sneak peek into the studio’s future endeavors. Hideaki Anno established Studio Khara after departing from Gainax, where the original Evangelion series was created. Studio Khara’s debut project was the Rebuild of Evangelion films, which started as reimagined adaptations of the original series before branching out into fresh material.
In addition to assisting in the creation of several live-action projects by Anno, such as Shin Ultraman, Shin Godzilla, and Shin Kamen Rider, Bandai Namco revealed in 2024 that Khara would be responsible for producing the upcoming mainline Gundam series, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. The original Evangelion series drew significant influence from the works of Yoshiyuki Tomino, the creator of the original Gundam, making this collaboration an ideal crossover. Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX is set in an alternate timeline of the original Gundam anime, where the villains emerged victorious and the mechs underwent redesigns to align with Khara’s typical visual style.
In my observation, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX made a significant impact in Japan. Its prologue and compilation film opening took the top spot at the Japanese box office over the weekend of January 17th. The introductory song for the series, “Plazma” by Kenshi Yonezu, topped the Oricon Weekly Digital Singles chart with approximately 43,000 downloads in its debut week. Later on, Yonezu released a music video featuring clips from the anime, including the finale. A classic tune from Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack, “BEYOND THE TIME” by TM Network, was played during the second-last episode of GQuuuuuuX. This reprisal of the song catapulted it to the top of the Oricon charts once more, 37 years after its original release.
