I was surprised to see a new Dakota Fanning movie really taking off on Paramount+! It’s a horror film that came out on October 10th, and even though critics haven’t been completely on board – the Rotten Tomatoes score is a bit low – it’s clearly found an audience and is doing really well as a stream.
As a movie critic, I’m keeping a close eye on *Vicious*, and it’s clearly resonating with audiences. According to the data I’ve been tracking on FlixPatrol, it’s shot up the charts on Paramount+ and is currently holding strong at number two in the US. But it’s not just a domestic success – as of October 19th, *Vicious* has actually hit number one in countries like Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, France, Germany, Italy, and Mexico! It’s also performing very well in Canada and the UK, landing at number five and number two respectively. Definitely a streaming title to watch.
The movie *Vicious* follows Polly as she experiences a terrifying night after receiving an enigmatic box. She’s told she must sacrifice something she despises, something she desperately needs, and something she cherishes, or face deadly consequences, and discovers a powerful supernatural force is at play.
Bryan Bertino, the director behind horror films like *The Strangers* and *The Dark and the Wicked*, helms *Vicious*. He also served as a producer on the film, alongside Richard Suckle, who has produced hits like *American Hustle* and *Wonder Woman*. The cast features Elle Fanning, as well as Rachel Blanchard, Mary McCormack, Devyn Nekoda, and Kathryn Hunter.
After premiering at Fantastic Fest, the film *Vicious* became available on Paramount+ and for rental online on October 10th. Though it’s been watched by many on streaming platforms, reviews haven’t been positive. Currently, *Vicious* has a 44% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes (based on 34 reviews) and a 33% audience score.
Dakota Fanning Has Had Success on Streaming
Dakota Fanning has starred in many popular films, and several, like the *Twilight* series, continue to be popular on streaming platforms. Notably, *Man on Fire* recently appeared on Netflix’s charts even though it came out over 20 years ago. More recently, she acted with Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber in the Netflix series *The Perfect Couple*, which quickly gained over 20 million views. Fanning also received Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for her work in *Ripley*.
In 2024, Dakota Fanning appeared in the horror movie *The Watchers*, directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan. While the film didn’t receive great reviews (earning a 32% score on Rotten Tomatoes) and made a modest $33 million in theaters, it eventually became available for streaming on both HBO Max and Netflix. Looking ahead, Fanning will star in the new Peacock series *All Her Fault*, alongside Sarah Snook and Jake Lacy, both known for their roles in *Succession* and *The White Lotus*.
Vicious is currently available to stream on Paramount+.
