As an anime enthusiast, I couldn’t contain my excitement when the news about Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX broke out! What made it truly special was the fact that Studio Khara, a company founded by the genius minds behind Neon Genesis Evangelion, was in charge. Hideaki Anno, a key creative director in Evangelion, is part of this team. Evangelion is globally acclaimed as one of the best anime series ever made, so you can imagine the buzz when we learned that the same talented individuals were working on the next Gundam series! The connection between Gundam GQuuuuuuX and Evangelion was most evident in Episode 8, titled “Falling on the Moon.” This episode unveiled a brand-new mecha named gMS-κ GFreD, affectionately known as the Gundam Fred.

Spectators swiftly noted the notable resemblances between Gundam Fred and the renowned EVA Unit-01 from Evangelion. The mechanical designs in Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX took inspiration from the slender physique, intricate details, and unconventional head structure with a long chin of Evangelion. The main color of Gundam Fred is a shade of purple, resembling, though not an identical match, that of EVA 01. Additionally, the first appearance of Gundam Fred mirrors that of the EVA, as characters walk in front of it on a bridge. The similarities to Evangelion were so noticeable that Anno was compelled to clarify through Studio Khara’s social media that he had no involvement with Episode 8.

Is Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX Just Copying Evangelion?

Artists frequently stick to certain themes and visual approaches across their lifetimes, as they tend to be drawn to specific topics more than others. For instance, Anno’s work often explores existential questions related to individuality, melancholy, and the value of fellowship. Although Anno played a minor part in the creation of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, contributing to some scenes, particularly the flashback in Episode 2, Studio Khara is made up of various creators who have worked on Evangelion. Consequently, it’s not surprising that elements of style and themes seen in Evangelion might reappear in Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX.

Nevertheless, it’s essential to clarify that Gundam GQuuuuuuX doesn’t directly copy Evangelion. Instead, the resemblance can be attributed to fans identifying similar aesthetics derived from the same creative teams working on both projects. The mechas in Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, such as the “Gundam Fred,” might appear like EVA Units due to Ikuto Yamashita’s involvement, who previously worked on the original Neon Genesis Evangelion. Furthermore, both series share a significant number of directors and writers, which could explain why some scenes, camera angles, and overall style bear similarities.

While Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX may share some thematic elements with Evangelion, it is not a case of plagiarism. The storylines and characters in Gundam GQuuuuuuX differ significantly from those in Evangelion. In Evangelion, the focus is on a post-apocalyptic government trying to stop destructive entities known as Angels from annihilating Earth. On the other hand, Gundam GQuuuuuuX revolves around teenagers engaging in underground mecha battles with mobile suits, eventually becoming embroiled in an internal political conflict. Furthermore, the design of Gundam Fred bears little resemblance to EVA Unit-01.

In comparison to EVA Unit-01, Fred boasts a broader spectrum of colors, featuring a lighter shade of purple, more turquoise and orange contrasts in the official artwork. On the other hand, EVA Unit-01 predominantly sports a bright purple body with some lime green and dark black accents. What sets Gundam Fred apart is its cat-like antennae, making it distinct from the EVA. Although both projects may seem similar on the surface, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX should not be perceived as a spinoff of Evangelion but rather as an independent work that merely bears certain superficial resemblances.
