If you have Amazon Prime, you can now stream *John Candy: I Like Me*, and it’s well worth watching. The documentary is a delightful look at Candy’s life and career, featuring a ton of stories from famous friends and colleagues. Director Colin Hanks revealed to TopMob that Martin Short had warned him the project would be a lot of work, and he was right!
Pauly Shore is one of the many celebrities who share memories of Candy in the documentary. When TopMob spoke with Tom Hanks before the film’s release, he explained how challenging it was to include all the interview subjects. Hanks had anticipated these difficulties, as Shore was one of the first to point out the potential organizational hurdles – not only in securing interviews, but also in finding people willing to participate.
It just took more time than expected. Martin Short warned me early on that getting people on board would be easy, perhaps *too* easy. He said everyone would want to participate, so I needed to be selective about who I approached. He was right – every person we talked to was interested.
Tom Hanks quipped that if everyone’s schedules had aligned, he could have finished the documentary, *John Candy: I Like Me*, in about a month. Producer Ryan Reynolds explained that coordinating interviews with stars like Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd took months. Even though many celebrities were eager to participate, making the film was a significant challenge.
Colin Hanks, an actor and son of Tom Hanks, recently released a new documentary. He was hesitant to take on the project after directing *Eagles Of Death Metal: Nos Amis (Our Friends)*, which detailed the 2015 terrorist attack at an Eagles Of Death Metal concert in Paris. Hanks explained that his experience with that film actually helped him feel more confident and engaged while making *John Candy: I Like Me*.
The main point from our last discussion was to embrace discomfort – to push yourself beyond your comfort zone and explore new ideas you might not otherwise consider. It’s actually a positive thing to feel a little uneasy, and I kept that in mind. When things started to feel challenging, I reminded myself it wasn’t a critical situation, and encouraged us to keep going. I’m really pleased with the result.
I really enjoyed the documentary and I’m glad with how it turned out. It’s great that *I Like Me* celebrates the late star’s vibrant public image while also honestly showing the intense anxiety he felt as he became famous.

I stopped watching John Candy movies because I knew something sad was about to happen, and I couldn’t bear to see it. Knowing the ending was too painful, so I preferred to stop before it got to that point.
You know, despite everything, John Candy was just genuinely inspiring. He was a total pro, always bringing his A-game, and everyone looked up to him – from his buddies at Second City to newer comics like Conan O’Brien. And it’s amazing to see his legacy still living on today! They’ve even included little nods to him in things like *Deadpool* and *Family Guy*, which just proves how much of an impact he had.
Even if you’re not already a fan of director Candy, *I Like Me* is a really enjoyable film. It’s also great that Amazon Prime Video now has a lot of Candy’s other movies available, making it easy to discover his fantastic comedic work from the last few decades. I highly recommend this film – it was a challenge for Colin Hanks and the team to get so many celebrities involved, but the result is definitely worth it.
