A high-ranking US Army officer, Major General William ‘Hank’ Taylor, has revealed he used ChatGPT to help him make important decisions regarding military matters.
Artificial intelligence tools, such as ChatGPT, are now a regular part of many people’s routines. People are using them at work, for entertainment like creating music playlists, and even for shopping at certain stores in the US.
The US military has acknowledged using ChatGPT, particularly among personnel stationed in South Korea. Major General William ‘Hank’ Taylor told Business Insider he’s been using it frequently and has become quite familiar with the tool.
He explained to reporters in Washington D.C. that he’s working on developing models to improve decision-making for everyone. As a commander, his goal is to make well-timed, advantageous decisions.
US Army is even using ChatGPT
Major General Taylor has previously discussed how AI could give militaries a significant edge in timing and speed. He stated earlier in 2024, as reported by Business Insider, that those who believe AI will be decisive in future battles are likely correct.
I think pretty soon, battles are going to be decided super fast – like, at the speed of computers, not how quickly a person can think. It’s going to be a whole new level of fast-paced action, honestly.
Despite the benefits, there are concerns. Experts within the US Army and government have cautioned that AI systems could potentially expose confidential information after being trained on it.
AI isn’t just being used in one area of military training. According to a report by Pablo Torre and Hunterbrook, BrainCo, a company specializing in neurotechnology, has probably been required to share data with the Chinese government for use in training soldiers.
BrainCo’s FocusCalm headbands, which measure brain activity, are popular with elite athletes. Some well-known users include Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc, tennis stars Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek, the Manchester City soccer team, and professional esports players.
