Hideaki Anno Juggles Five Exciting New Projects – What’s Coming Next?

It’s been disclosed on Studio Khara’s X account that acclaimed animator, director, and scriptwriter Hideaki Anno, recognized for producing the groundbreaking Neon Genesis Evangelion series, is presently developing at least five screenplays. If a new Shin Kamen Rider project gets approved, he might add a sixth to his workload.

As of now, no details about the essence of the five screenplays have been disclosed. However, Japanese blogger MW Iwai combined Anno’s statement from Studio Khara’s X with publicly accessible information on Anno’s work schedules to create a timeline for the numerous projects Anno has managed since 2018. This includes “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX: Beginning,” which debuted in January, and the upcoming “GQuuuuuuX” TV anime, scheduled for airing in April.

53 years ago on this date, March 18th, marked the beginning of the Kamen Rider vs. Shocker series. Two years ago today, we celebrated the start of the new Shin Kamen Rider series.

Presently, I’m engrossed in voice recording and scriptwriting for five distinct projects. Should the Shin Kamen Rider: Masker World project receive approval, I am eager to dedicate myself to it as well, making it my sixth undertaking.

Anno’s Talks About His Intense Work Schedule in Greater Detail

GquuuuuX Has Been In the Works For 7 Long Years

Two days prior to Studio Khara disclosing Hideaki Anno’s thoughts on his ongoing projects, they also revealed an extensive update from Anno regarding the intricate production timeline of the upcoming “Mobile Suit Gundam GquuuuuuX.” Originally conceived in 2018 by renowned director, screenwriter, and storyboard artist Kazuya Tsurumaki, who finalized the story concept in December of that year, Anno has been collaborating on the project since then. This collaboration intensified in 2021, with Anno submitting four scripts in 2022 amidst handling post-production work for the “Shin Ultraman” film, preparing for the Hideaki Anno Exhibition, scouting locations for “Shin Kamen Rider,” and overseeing bonus footage for “Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time.” (In my own words) Two days ago, Studio Khara shared insights from Hideaki Anno about the long-term development of the upcoming “Mobile Suit Gundam GquuuuuuX,” which was initially conceptualized by Kazuya Tsurumaki in 2018. Since then, Anno has been collaborating on the project, with significant progress made in 2021 and four scripts submitted in 2022 while he also managed post-production work for “Shin Ultraman,” prepared for his own exhibition, scouted locations for “Shin Kamen Rider,” and oversaw bonus footage for “Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time.”)

This year, Anno has been juggling two significant tasks: overseeing the debut of the anime “GquuuuuX: Beginning,” and orchestrating the 50th anniversary celebrations for the iconic director Leiji Matsumoto’s “Space Battleship Yamato.” On March 15, the comprehensive exhibition titled “Space Battleship Yamato: The Complete Record” was held in Shibuya. This exhibition showcased a wealth of materials chronicling Space Battleship Yamato’s five-decade history, including original scripts, sketches, animation cels, audio recordings, and replicas of the sketches and storyboards from the series.

Mobile Suit Gundam GquuuuuuX is set to premiere on April 8.
