The Predator movies have been popular for nearly forty years, but haven’t inspired many successful video games. Dan Trachtenberg, the director behind films like Prey and the upcoming Predator: Badlands, thinks it’s time for that to change. He believes a Predator game should be as high-quality as those based on major franchises like Call of Duty or Halo.
Trachtenberg expressed his desire for a large-scale, open-world action-adventure game in the style of Uncharted or Assassin’s Creed, potentially featuring the Predator. He mentioned being disappointed that the previously planned ‘Concrete Jungle’ game never materialized and believes there’s a lot of exciting gameplay potential with the Predator franchise, hoping a project like that will come to fruition.
Predator: Concrete Jungle came out in 2005 and allowed players to control a Predator trying to get back technology stolen by humans. Director Trachtenberg hadn’t played the game itself, but he shared that he once designed a level for a Predator video game as part of a contest held by the now-closed GamePro magazine.
Trachtenberg remembers being a big fan of GamePro magazine, which once held a contest where readers could design a video game level and potentially have it featured in print. He submitted a level for a Predator game, though he admits it was heavily inspired by Contra, but unfortunately, his design wasn’t selected for publication.
Earlier this year, Trachtenberg revealed that the game Shadow of the Colossus was a major influence on Badlands. He also mentioned Half-Life 2, Prince of Persia, and Uncharted as key inspirations for the game’s story.
The new Predator movie, Badlands, will be released in theaters on November 7th. Last year, the game Predator: Hunting Grounds became available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
