As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of similarities between games, but the recent controversy surrounding Honkai: Star Rail and Onmyoji feels like it’s crossed a line. It’s one thing to draw inspiration from other works, but outright copying visual sequences and even character designs is a whole different ball game.
As an ardent fan, I’ve found myself in a bit of a conundrum over the subtly accusatory post from the official Weibo account of Onmyoji. They seem to be suggesting a potential case of plagiarism in the latest trailer for Honkai: Star Rail, which has certainly sparked quite a stir in the gaming community.
As a devoted fan, I couldn’t help but notice the post subtly hinting at HoYoverse without directly mentioning them. By strategically incorporating characters from Honkai: Star Rail’s Chinese title and displaying an image of Tsukiyomi, it appears to be sending a message about prudence in our actions.
As a seasoned gamer and long-time observer of the Chinese gaming industry, I can’t help but feel a sense of deja vu as yet another plagiarism dispute between NetEase and Tencent unfolds. It seems that these two tech giants have a history of clashing over game similarities, and this latest incident only serves to remind me of the challenges faced by developers in this fast-paced and highly competitive field.
The trailer under discussion, launched for the characters of Honkai: Star Rail on Sundays, features various visual segments reminiscent of scenes found in the Onmyoji’s Jinkougyou trailer.
Critics have noted similarities, like the rising lights in the Honkai trailer which echo the falling lights in the Onmyoji trailer.
Furthermore, certain online users have noticed a resemblance between a piano scene in the latest trailer and one from Identity V’s COA 7 trailer, another game by NetEase. This similarity could imply that HoYoverse frequently utilizes visual cues in their trailers.
It’s more than Onmyoji, we have Identity Ⅴ here.

The discussion persists, divided among different viewpoints, regarding whether certain similarities are intentional homages to other pop culture icons, such as Neon Genesis Evangelion, or something else entirely.
For those claiming they draw inspiration from Evangelion, surely it isn’t difficult to distinguish between inspiration and outright duplication! Even a child in elementary school could notice the distinction.

Back in February 2024, HoYoVerse encountered comparable allegations regarding plagiarism. Their Sparkle trailer drew comparisons with the “marenol” music video.
During that period, musician LeaF dismissed the allegations, implying that the trailer was actually a tribute rather than a duplicate.
As the discussion progresses, it becomes apparent that NetEase seems displeased, which could lead to an intense argument or disagreement.
On December 4, 2024, version 3.0 of the game Honkai: Star Rail will be launched, and it can be played on PlayStation 5, personal computers running Windows, and mobile devices.
