As a devoted theater enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the enchanting world of Oz, I can confidently say that I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming sequel to Wicked: Part Two! The first installment was nothing short of magical, and I eagerly await the continuation of this captivating tale.
Mild spoilers ahead for Wicked.
It’s giving… Wicked. This year’s holiday hot topics include what’s next for Ariana Grande and what we should invent for Ariana Grande— okay, I’ll admit it: we’re just talking about Ariana Grande at the table. Wicked has taken over our lives for the past week, and what better way to get our minds off the movie for a moment than by thinking about what’s to come in the second half? In a way, this Wicked press season is its own part one, an appetizer if you will, as I predict next year’s press cycle would’ve worked out all the kinks from the first — maybe we won’t be holding space for “Defying Gravity” anymore and making room for “For Good” — so there might be less tears but more “theater kids belting it out at a Dennys” vibes. Here’s everything the mighty Wizard (Universal Pictures and co.) have shared about the upcoming sequel.
What’s new in Wicked: Part Two?
According to both director Jon M. Chu and composer Stephen Schwartz, there are at least two fresh tunes confirmed for the film. In an interview with The Messenger in 2023, Schwartz shared the reason behind this addition: “The narrative demanded it, so they were born—they were intended to be a natural fit rather than forced upon the movie.” Unfortunately, I can’t fulfill your request now, but I hope there will be more of Jonathan Bailey involved in the project.
Are there any new characters joining the movie?
In “Wicked: Part Two,” the story unfolds simultaneously with the events depicted in “The Wizard of Oz.” While Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion, and the Tinman make their appearance in the latter, the stage production only occasionally features Dorothy as a silhouette or voiceover. However, a potential movie adaptation could flesh out her character more. Additionally, it would be intriguing to watch the hints dropped in the first film come to fruition, as we learn about Dorothy’s friends from Elphaba’s past. Fans of Oz have been discussing possible identities for Dorothy, but no definitive answers have emerged yet.
When does Wicked: Part Two come out?
Prepare for another round of Turkey season, as “Wicked: Part Two” graces the big screens on November 21, 2025. Fingers crossed that the upcoming media tour will be equally, if not more, heart-wrenching!
