LoL dev admits Worlds 2024 most banned champion should have been nerfed

As a seasoned League of Legends player who’s been through the ups and downs of various champions, I can’t help but feel a tad worried about Aurora. The fact that she was banned an astounding 77 times during Worlds 2024, compared to Yone’s 63 bans, is quite telling. It seems the dev team might have underestimated her power level, given she wasn’t even picked or banned once during the NA series!


Aurora, a relatively new champion in League of Legends, hasn’t been seen much at the Worlds 2024 tournament. This absence has sparked concern among the development team, who are planning to make adjustments (nerfs) to her abilities soon.

Starting at the play-in round, Aurora amassed an impressive 77 bans compared to Yone’s 63 in second place, a significant difference. This resulted in Aurora being present just 19 times during Worlds, while Xiaohu, Creme, and Kiin each selected the champion on three occasions.

In the World Finals of 2024, TopMob had a conversation with Lead Gameplay Director, Matthew Leung-Harrison, to gather his insights about the champion’s standing within the professional gaming community, as well as what enthusiasts from all Elos realms should anticipate from her in the future.

He stated that perhaps we could have made her slightly weaker before the tournament started, as we did significantly reduce her wall jump range, the duration of her ultimate, and how far she jumps when using the Naked R cast. However, these adjustments didn’t prove to be enough in the end.

I’m not convinced she’s excessively dominant in the current version of the game. In fact, she didn’t see any play or bans throughout the entire North American series. However, it might be worth considering that players may not have had extensive practice against Aurora.

In response to queries about Aurora’s changes in future updates, Leung-Harrison affirmed that further adjustments are planned, many of which will be tailored to cater to a wider range of players.

He mentioned that they’ve been brainstorming adjustments for a while, aiming to balance out some of her biased characteristics and make her less predictable in gameplay, considering both her high capture rate and the ease with which her ultimate ability can be utilized.

Initially, we hesitated about introducing her due to concerns that she might prove difficult for players during development. However, upon release, she turned out to cater more towards advanced and professional players, which is not quite in line with our intended balance. So, we’re adjusting her mechanics to make her less challenging and more enjoyable for a wider range of players.

As a gamer, I’m excited about the upcoming changes, but I don’t have an exact timeline yet. It seems like the fine-tuning will happen before we dive into the new season in January 2025. With the debut of Champion Ambessa and the Fearless draft system on the global stage, the dev team has a packed schedule ahead for the next few months!
