As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the captivating world of cinema, I must say I am truly intrigued by this upcoming remake of “Tape”. Being a native of Hong Kong, I have witnessed our city’s cinematic landscape evolve over the years, and it’s fascinating to see such a poignant story being adapted to our unique cultural context.
The Hong Kong remake of the 2001 psychological thriller “Tape,” originally directed by Richard Linklater, is preparing for its debut at the American Film Market and a theatrical release in its new home. As they gear up for these milestones, the producers are unveiling a trailer for “Tape.
The film ‘Tape’ examines the aftermath of a distressing incident at a graduation party, compelling its three former companions to revisit their shared past. The narrative unfolds around themes of control, deceit, and the fluidity of reality, as they grapple with the consequences of their actions. In this updated version, the setting shifts from the United States to Hong Kong – a place still grappling with the impact of the #MeToo movement. Simultaneously, it reflects the contemporary era marked by heavy reliance on technology.
The upcoming movie is helmed by former banker-turned-film producer and director Bizhan Tong (known for “Forensic Psychologist” and “The Audition”). It features Kenny Kwan (“The Legend of Luzhen,” “The White Storm”), Selena Lee (“Queen of News”) and Adam Pak (“A Guilty Conscience”) in roles previously played by Robert Sean Leonard, Uma Thurman, and Ethan Hawke.
The movie has previously been shown at various film festivals, including the Houston Asian American Pacific Islander (HAAPI) Film Festival, the Asian Film Festival Barcelona, and several other events.
In China, Beijing Sita Digital Technology has obtained the rights to show the movie, while worldwide distribution is managed by EST N8. The pre-release cinema showings will kick off in Hong Kong on November 16th.
The movie is made by Tong and Lee, and has a joint screenplay penned by Belber, Tong, Lee, and Bonnie Lo. John Sloss (known for “Green Book”), Belber, Jaeson Ma, Kris Eiamsakulrat, Tenten Wei, and Andy Wang serve as executive producers. Keaton Henson (“Supernova”) and Phillip Edwin Osborne are responsible for the film’s score.
Tong expressed excitement about adapting ‘Tape’ into a Hong Kong backdrop, as it offers an opportunity to delve into cultural aspects seldom seen in Asian films. The original story’s themes seem particularly relevant today, and he looks forward to presenting this reworked version globally. This endeavor aims to foster connections between the East and West while championing Hong Kong cinema,” Tong said.
