‘The Substance’ Gets Streaming Release: Here’s How to Watch the Demi Moore Body-Horror Film Online

As a longtime aficionado of cinema who’s seen his fair share of transformative roles, I must say that “The Substance” piqued my interest from the moment I heard Demi Moore would be taking on such an unconventional role. The fact that it premiered at Cannes and boasts a grindhouse-Kubrick vibe only made it more intriguing.

Moore and Margaret Qualley experience the cost of perfection and the weight of the male gaze in Coralie Fargeat’s intense body-horror film, which debuted at Cannes in May. The movie follows a once-prominent Hollywood actress (Moore), whose career slide leads her to a fitness program similar to Jane Fonda’s. After being dismissed from this job, she is presented with an innovative medical treatment called The Substance, claimed to restore a more youthful and enhanced self.

The cast also includes Dennis Quaid, Hugo Diego Garcia, Phillip Schurer and Joseph Balderrama.

During an interview with EbMaster, the French director elaborated on the film’s feminist undertones, explaining that body horror serves as an effective means to convey the violence inherent in the struggles faced by these women.

In his assessment of the movie, film critic Owen Gleiberman, known as EbMaster, describes Fargeat’s style as akin to Kubrick from a grindhouse setting, blending ‘Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ and ‘Showgirls’ in an eccentrically entertaining, emotionally purging fashion. He further notes that the film is exceptionally bold in its intense manner, being delightfully audacious.

Speaking about Moore, his words are that her performance is incredibly bold. He also notes that in some sense, she’s portraying a character reminiscent of herself – a star that, as per a sexist perspective in Hollywood, has supposedly passed her peak.
