As a seasoned cinematic globetrotter who has traversed the seven seas and countless festivals, I am always eager to unearth the gems that lie hidden within the labyrinth of independent cinema. The 2024 Work-in-Progress Lab at National Film Development Corporation’s Film Bazaar is one such beacon that promises to shine light on six promising features hailing from various corners of South Asia.
For the 2024 Work-in-Progress Lab of the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC)’s Indian project market, Film Bazaar, six feature films have been chosen. Among these, five first-time directors will participate in this event scheduled from November 20th to 24th.
2024’s selection encompasses various languages, showcasing works such as Tribeny Rai’s Nepali film “Shape of Momos,” Shakteedhar Bir’s Bengali title “Gaangshalik” (which translates to River Bird), Mohan Kumar Valasala’s Telugu project “Yerra Mandaram” (meaning The Red Hibiscus), Ridham Janve’s dual-language films “Kaatti Ri Raatti” (translating to Hunters Moon in both Gaddi and Nepali), Siddharth Badi’s Marathi film “Umal,” and Vivek Kumar’s Hindi feature “The Good The Bad The Hungry.
As a cinephile with a soft spot for groundbreaking South Asian indie films, I’m thrilled to share that the lab is set to carry on its unique blend of online and in-person screenings. This dual format offers an exceptional opportunity for filmmakers and mentors to work together in real-time during the post-production phase, fostering a vibrant exchange of ideas and insights.
The program is designed specifically for theatrical aspects, where it matches up-and-coming directors and editors with seasoned professionals for personalized consultation meetings. These mentors come from a variety of backgrounds such as festival directors, critics, producers, and experienced editors, who collaborate with the filmmakers to perfect their final versions of work.
From its debut in 2008, this program has played a crucial role in launching films that have left an impact on the global film festival scene. Some of its notable graduates include “Putul Nacher Itikatha” (2023), the Busan award-winner “Shivamma” (2021), “Eeb Allay Ooo!” (2018), “Lipstick Under My Burkha” (2015), and “Ship of Theseus” (2011).
Film Bazaar remains central in our region, connecting filmmakers, industry experts, and viewers alike, with a focus on fostering and showcasing the art of South Asian cinematography.
The latest edition of the event has revealed a bold lineup for its co-production market, featuring Shobu Yarlagadda, producer of “Baahubali,” among the chosen projects. This market displays 29 different productions from various countries including India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Australia, the U.K., Germany, and Hong Kong.
The market operates simultaneously with the International Film Festival of India, which takes place from November 20th to 28th in Goa.
