• Layer 1 blockchain Sui has launched a hub in Dubai, a first in a global series of hubs, to support blockchain developers and entrepreneurs.
  • “The vision is to be the heart of hackathons and implementation even in Dubai,” said Kostas Chalkias, co-founder and chief cryptographer at Mysten Labs, which developed the Sui network.

As a seasoned crypto investor with roots in Greece and a wandering spirit that led me to Dubai from the sunny shores of California, I find the launch of the Sui blockchain hub here incredibly exciting. Having worked at Meta, I’ve seen the power of innovation firsthand, and the potential of this hub is nothing short of groundbreaking.

In simpler terms, the Sui blockchain has established a development center in Dubai that serves as a nurturing ground for blockchain creators and business owners. One of the founders shared this information during an interview with CoinDesk.

Originating from Greece, Kostas Chalkias – a key figure as co-founder and chief cryptographer at Mysten Labs, creators of the Sui network – relocated from California to Dubai. He expressed his ambition to attract a vast team of problem solvers to join him in Dubai.

Chalkias stated that, much like Leonidas, our team consists of skilled developers, and if our initial efforts prove incredibly successful within the first month, we may expand significantly, mirroring the 300 soldiers in Leonidas’ army,” said Chalkias.

In simpler terms, Chalkias outlined a situation where a government might need a blockchain-based solution for an issue, and rather than spending several days to develop the solution, this platform could swiftly create it as a smart contract almost instantaneously.

According to Chalkias, when presenting an idea, we can constructively discuss and develop its proof of concept right then and there, unlike any other blockchain. In fact, this instantaneous creation of a proof of concept is unprecedented.

The hub is in collaboration with Ghaf Group, a blockchain firm in the region.

In a groundbreaking move, it was revealed that Dubai will lead a worldwide network of hubs, marking the beginning of a global initiative. This bustling city has been drawing in the Web3 community with its transparent regulations and straightforward licensing procedures. Notably, digital asset exchanges such as Binance, Crypto.com, and OKX have secured approvals this year due to these favorable policies.

According to Chalkias, while the UAE leads in securing deals, it’s not as strong in actual development. His vision is to make Dubai a hub for hackathons and implementation. Initially, this hub aims to assist the government in their digitalization efforts.

In February this year, the Sui network, constructed by ex-Meta employees including Chalkias, surpassed Cardano, Near, and Aptos in terms of total value held (TVH) or locked within it. Some people are now favoring Sui as their preferred blockchain over Solana.

In Dubai, Chalkias mentioned they are establishing a base for solution development. Their intention is to invest in this area and contribute engineering expertise. He plans to deploy solution engineers here and aims to organize hackathons monthly in Dubai, where participants will work non-stop for about three days.
