Over the weekend of October 12, 2024, there was an unauthorized access to Game Freak’s systems, resulting in a significant data leak related to the Pokemon franchise they co-own.
Additionally, it was revealed through leaked data that thousands of employees’ personal information was exposed. A transcript from the leak suggested a significant factor in Ash’s storyline conclusion may have been tense relationships between Rica Matsumoto, Ash Ketchum’s voice actress, and Ikue Otani, the voice behind Pikachu.
The leaks suggested that Game Freak might replace Matsumoto in Ash’s storyline, should they decide to proceed, due to rumored strife between her and Otani which seemed to be affecting the overall team spirit.

On October 14, 2024, Matsumoto debunked those rumors on X (previously known as Twitter). In her message, the Japanese voice actress clarified that the stories were fabricated and reassured Pokemon fans that no such incidents had occurred.
Back when we both started out, I forged a friendship with Ikue. Later down the line, she graciously joined me during my gaming tours as a special guest.
Additionally, the actress voicing Ash dismissed the rumors as “inappropriate and immature,” and she further commented that no one, including herself, appreciates the speculation about a supposed rift between her and Otani.
Although the original post about the leaks is no longer available, it hasn’t hindered the broader Pokemon anime community from circulating and debating the speculations that Ash’s departure from the animated series might be linked to behind-the-scenes conflicts.
Additionally, these rumors have gained more traction since Otani returned to play the character Pikachu in Pokemon Horizons, whereas Matsumoto has not been re-hired for any projects so far.
