As a seasoned analyst with over three decades of observing politics, technology, and societal shifts, I find myself intrigued by Trump’s latest pledge to free Ross Ulbricht, the Silk Road founder. This is not a simple case of political posturing but a complex intersection of technology, law, and policy that echoes my own journey through the digital revolution.

Donald Trump has once again expressed support for Ross Ulbricht, the imprisoned founder of the Silk Road, an illegal online marketplace.

Trump took to Truth Social to vow that he would “save” Ulbricht.

Trump Vows to Free Ulbricht if Re-elected

Previously elected leader posted a snapshot of Ross Ulbricht’s latest update signaling a new year spent in prison, with the caption: “Here we are, starting my 12th year imprisoned today. I aim to make the best use of this time and utilize it wisely,” Ulbricht wrote. In response, Trump commented, “I aim to free Ross Ulbricht!

In 2013, a 39-year-old individual was taken into custody due to allegations involving drug trafficking, money laundering, and computer hacking. This person is known for designing the clandestine online marketplace called Silk Road. On this hidden web service, illicit substances like heroin, cocaine, and LSD were traded anonymously using Bitcoin (BTC). Over a billion dollars worth of transactions took place on this platform before it was closed down not long after his arrest.

In 2015, Ulbricht received a sentence of two life imprisonments, each followed by an additional 40-year term without any chance for parole. Since then, authorities have managed to seize more than $1 billion worth of Bitcoin from Silk Road’s vault, as well as additional funds confiscated from associates linked to the marketplace and other illicit activities over time.

On previous occasions, Trump has expressed his backing for the founder. In May 2024, during the Libertarian National Convention, he pledged to grant clemency on his very first day back in office if re-elected. This announcement was met with applause and signs reading “Free Ross” being waved by many attendees. Subsequently, Ulbricht reacted on X, expressing gratitude by saying, “Thank you. Thank you. Thank you… After 11 years of incarceration, it’s challenging to find the words for how I feel right now.

Trump’s backing of the platform creator mirrors his increasingly positive view towards cryptocurrencies. During the same address, he took aim at Senator Warren, pledging to “fend off Elizabeth Warren and her associates from meddling with your Bitcoin.

Government Overreach

Trump’s pledge to commute Ross Ulbricht’s sentence has reignited discussions about the justice of his penalty, considering Silk Road’s significant influence in promoting Bitcoin. This online marketplace essentially introduced Bitcoin to mainstream audiences, demonstrating its potential for decentralized transactions, yet simultaneously tarnishing its image by linking it with illicit activities.

The trial of Ulbricht remains a contentious topic within the cryptocurrency sector. Many libertarians and crypto enthusiasts contend that his punishment was unduly severe, constituting a threat to the principles of decentralized finance and privacy. They interpret his sentence as an instance of government overstepping boundaries, intended to suppress innovation in decentralized technologies.

In my analysis, while some contend that the actions taken were warranted given the vast illicit drug trade facilitated through the darknet platform, causing significant harm, I personally find it crucial to emphasize that such activities pose a serious threat to societal well-being and should not be tolerated.
