A mother contacted the police because her 13-year-old daughter allegedly stole around $50,000 and gave it to online personalities like influencers and streamers.
Fans show their support for streamers and creators in various ways. Some enjoy watching all their content and actively participating in the chat, while others choose to donate money or become monthly subscribers.
Sometimes, creators receive generous donations from viewers who regularly support them. Streamers often advise against large donations, and some, like Asmongold, have even said they’ll ban viewers who give excessive amounts.
Over in Hong Kong, a 13-year-old girl has landed herself in hot water after her mom claimed she’d stolen close to $50,000 from her in secret.
13-year-old donated $49k to Chinese streamers
According to Headline Daily, a local newspaper in Hong Kong, the 13-year-old, who is known only as Yao, apparently stole a key to a safe from her mother’s handbag on several occasions between April and June.
According to the report, Yao took HK$380,000 (about $48,500 USD) from her parents with the intention of giving it to influencers on the Chinese social media platform, Xiaohongshu.
On June 12th, her parents noticed money was missing and immediately contacted the police to report it stolen. The 13-year-old girl was then arrested for the theft.
It’s happened before: people have used family money to send gifts to streamers they like.
In November 2024, a man in China spent $550,000 to get a female streamer to call him ‘bro’. To afford these donations, he stole $316,000 worth of goods from his workplace.
In the UK, a man filed a lawsuit against his wife, alleging she stole around $200 million worth of Bitcoin from him. He reportedly had to install hidden cameras in their home to gather evidence.
