It’s difficult to overstate how influential EverQuest has been on modern online role-playing games. Though its popularity isn’t what it once was, the original game—launched in 1999—was a huge hit during the early days of the internet and captured the hearts of many players. Now, three decades later, Game Jawn and Daybreak Game Company are releasing EverQuest Legends, aiming to recapture the feel of the classic 90s experience while making it accessible for today’s gamers who may not have as much time to dedicate to long-term progression. I recently had the opportunity to learn about new features like the Stance system and world tiers, designed to help players overcome challenges, at Summer Game Fest’s Play Days event.
EQL’s new multi-classing system lets you combine abilities from up to three different character classes. Beyond that, players will also have access to stances for melee fighters and invocations for spellcasters – unique states that provide special benefits while active. Melee characters can choose between Defense Stance (reducing physical damage by 50% and magic damage by 20%), Offense Stance (doubling melee damage and increasing critical hit chance by 25%), or Mage Hunter Stance (reducing magical damage taken by 50% and physical damage by 20%). All three stances offer clear advantages, though I personally find the options for spellcasters more appealing than those for melee fighters.
Caster Invocations offer three different states your character can enter. “Recover” boosts mana regeneration and lowers spell costs by 5%. “Over Channel” significantly weakens a target’s magical resistance and provides additional benefits based on your caster classes. However, my personal favorite is “Spell Blade.” This allows you to choose a spell that has a chance to activate whenever you attack in melee combat. During the demonstration, I saw a player combine Spell Blade with the Life Tap spell, letting him heal himself frequently while using melee attacks – which was especially effective for his Shadow Knight/Cleric/Monk hybrid character.

I spoke with David Youssefi, the executive producer of EQL, about how the Spell Blade works with other spells and how the team will ensure it remains balanced. He explained, using the Inversion spell as an example, that Spell Blade eliminates the lengthy casting time. However, it temporarily prevents you from using other spells for the same duration. “So, if you don’t cast constantly but need spells to go off quickly, this is a fantastic option,” David said. As a fan of the Magic Knight from Final Fantasy V, this Spell Blade Invocation sounds incredibly exciting, and I’m eager to try it out.
This game heavily emphasizes character building and power progression. Like games such as Diablo, it also features adjustable difficulty levels for challenging group content called raids. As the raid difficulty increases, enemies become tougher in multiple ways – they deal more damage, have more health, and even gain abilities from multiple classes. According to a developer, base-level monsters in the easiest difficulty already hit hard, but higher difficulties ramp up enemy stats significantly, adding new spells and abilities. While this sounds incredibly challenging, it also promises rewarding teamwork and opportunities for players to become exceptionally powerful. The developers have created systems that cater to both solo power fantasies and intense cooperative experiences, which is very appealing.

EverQuest Legends is now available for pre-order! If you pre-order, you’ll get access to a special beta test starting July 1st (though your progress won’t transfer to the full game), and you can also secure your preferred character name. The game itself costs $19.99, and there’s a $9.99 monthly subscription fee – your first month is free. However, EverQuest Legends won’t be included with Daybreak’s All-Access membership, so players who already subscribe to EverQuest or EverQuest II will need to pay for a separate subscription for this new game.
EverQuest Legends offers a fresh way for fans to enjoy the classic EverQuest experience, without requiring the dedication of a traditional classic server. If you played EverQuest when it first launched in 1999, you probably have less free time now. Legends recognizes this and lets you return to the world of Norrath without the same time commitment. I’m excited to jump back in and explore, and maybe even relive the memories with some Surge and Doritos!
