Honkai: Star Rail's Denizens of Abundance Explained

As a seasoned traveler across the cosmos, I have had the privilege of witnessing the epic tales and conflicts that unfold within the realm of Honkai: Star Rail. The recent events involving the Borisin and their covert invasion to free Hoolay have been nothing short of captivating, especially when considering the centuries-long feud between them and their kin, the Foxians, as well as the Xianzhou Alliance.

In the storylines of Honkai: Star Rail versions 2.4 and 2.5, the Borisin secretly invaded Xianzhou Luofu with the objective of liberating their Warhead, Hoolay, from the Shackling Prison. The narrative primarily revolves around the strife between the Borisin and their kin, the Foxians. Nevertheless, it subtly delves into the centuries-long conflict between Xianzhou Alliance and the faction that includes the Borisin – The Denizens of Abundance.

The Denizens of Abundance comprises long-life species that follow the Aeon Yaoshi, which include:

  • Borisin: These canine-humanoid species share a common ancestor with the Foxians and both once lived on the planet of Verdantia. It is said that Yaoshi created the Redspring within Verdantia, and those who drank from it gained immortality. This blessing also causing a population boom within it, leading to its collapse. The survivors fled the planet, and the Borisin eventually gained notoriety for conquering other civilizations with their brute strength and immense knowledge of biotechnology.
  • Wingweavers: These are feathered species that used to live on Muldrasil. They have been enemies of Honkai: Star Rail‘s Xianzhou since before the latter gained immortality. They slaughtered many of the Alliance’s natives.
  • Houyhnhnm: These centaur-like species have four hind limbs and two arms. They have formed alliances with the Borisin and have recently been enslaved by the Antimatter Legion.
  • Heliobi: These are shapeless species of pure energy. Their origin is unknown, and while the Xianzhou classifies them as a Denizen of Abundance, their affiliation to the faction is unclear. They have been enemies of the Alliance since time immemorial, as they often try to possess and drain human bodies.

The Conflict Between the Denizens of Abundance and Xianzhou Alliance

The Follower’s unwavering loyalty to their way leads them to become natural adversaries with the Xianzhou, whose mission is to eliminate the “scourges of Prosperity.” To grasp this struggle, it’s essential to learn about the Alliance, who were once dedicated adherents of the Way of Prosperity.

The History of the Xianzhou and the Abundance

In ancient times, the Xianzhou Alliance pursued an elixir for eternal life, which they received from Yaoshi via the Ambrosial Tree that the Aeon had grown on Mount Luofu. However, it turned out that the extended lifespan they desired came with a dark twist – the oldest members of the Xianzhou eventually became afflicted with a condition known as Mara-Striking. This strange malady causes those of the long-lived species to gradually lose their mental faculties and develop agonizing growths on their bodies, ultimately transforming them into hostile entities.

In the realm of Xianzho, the pursuit of immortality led to an unprecedented population boom. Unfortunately, this growth was not handled effectively and ultimately led to internal conflicts and civil wars. Moreover, external forces, enticed by the promise of immortality, launched attacks on the fleet. Fed up with the violence and turmoil, the Rainbow Arbiter Lan, a valiant hero from the Alliance, stood up to challenge the Abundance’s dominion over Xianzho.

The Denizens of Abundance Wars

Not everyone supported Lan’s dissent. However, the Alliance soon called for their help when the Wingweavers started advancing towards the Xianzhou fleet. The hero made a deal with the Flint Emperor of the Heliobi, who was imprisoned in the Shackling Prison, to harness their power. Together, they fired an arrow that destroyed the Ambrosial Arbor and the invading Wingweaver army in one shot. The force of this attack was so strong that it damaged every ship in the Xianzhou fleet. Lan and the Flint Emperor ascended into godhood afterward and became the Aeon of The Hunt.

Following the aftermath of the initial Denizens of Abundance Conflict, the Alliance pledged loyalty to Lan. This commitment resulted in three significant skirmishes against the Denizens of Abundance, two of which were particularly severe. The most recent one resulted in the devastating loss of hundreds of thousands of Xianzhou aircrew. It has been close to three decades since the third battle, but it appears that the Borisin invasion may ignite another conflict.
