What a season it’s been on the Katina! It’s hard to believe how much has happened. Having the entire cast of Real Housewives of Salt Lake City on charter felt like a trip back in time. In the season finale, everyone reflects on the drama, but Captain Jason put it perfectly: “People matured, relationships were repaired, egos were put in check, and respect was gained.” By the end, the crew seemed to have forgotten all their disagreements – and who wouldn’t be friendly after earning an extra $26,000?
I haven’t been very impressed with recent seasons of Below Deck. It feels like the show has focused too much on manufactured drama and romantic relationships, losing sight of what made it good: watching people work hard and live together in challenging conditions. But this season of Down Under reminded me how entertaining it can be when you put a group of dedicated yacht crew members together and let them do their jobs. The conflicts between departments weren’t usually caused by people being bad at their jobs, but by different ways of communicating. When there were issues, like with Mike or Alesia in the kitchen, they were addressed. Honestly, I agree with Jason – this season was one of the best yet.
According to Daisy, the biggest issue with this crew is everyone’s large egos. This week’s episode continues to show João and Ben locked in a bitter argument, with Ben being incredibly rude and refusing to leave his cabin. João tells Daisy that trying to talk to Ben when he was drunk and exhausted didn’t work, and he believes their fight has seriously damaged their friendship. The entire crew, both those working with guests and behind the scenes, are upset with Ben’s disrespectful actions. Even Barbie, when speaking with Ellie, admits Ben went too far, comparing his behavior to someone intentionally sabotaging their work in the kitchen.
Before the night was over, both João and Ben sent Jason messages about what happened. Ben claimed Daisy had tried to start a fight with him, so he went to a separate guest bedroom to avoid trouble, but this wasn’t really what happened. The easiest way to avoid conflict is to not cause it – Ben could have simply talked to Daisy calmly, even if they didn’t see eye-to-eye. Being able to disagree without getting overly upset is a sign of maturity. Even if Ben thought waiting until morning to talk to Daisy was best, he had other options besides going to a separate cabin; he could have at least stayed in his own bed.
Putting aside the issue of Ben creating a fictional guest cabin, his aggressive behavior – including his tone, word choice, and door-slamming – was just as problematic as Jenna’s recent drunken outburst, and arguably worse. As a department head, he’s expected to set a good example, yet he faced no immediate consequences, likely because it was the final charter of the season. Many viewers also noted a double standard, as only Jenna’s actions were met with significant repercussions. While multiple factors were at play, Ben wasn’t entirely let off the hook. The next morning, Jason challenged Ben’s claim that the crew was stirring up trouble, defending the interior team’s right to be upset. The captain then spoke with both João and Daisy to get their perspectives and called a meeting of all department heads. He reminded them of their initial commitment to professionalism and running a smooth boat, but also held each of them accountable for their role in the conflict. He told Daisy not to be disrespectful, João to focus on diffusing tense situations, and acknowledged that Ben’s behavior was unacceptable, especially considering the challenges the galley had faced throughout the season.
João and Ben resolved their issues with a conversation and a hug, and Ben later did the same with Daisy. Ben apologized for destroying the guest cabin, admitting he’d been acting selfishly. Daisy accepted his apology and then shared her previously unsaid opinion: she doesn’t think Ellie deserves a promotion, believing Ellie is fortunate to even have her job given her behavior this season. In a private moment, Ben reflected that Ellie’s success might be due to starting from a difficult position. Despite this, Ellie expected a promotion that had been promised to her. She asked Ben about it, but ultimately didn’t receive the sous-chef position. Elsewhere, Daisy spoke with Alesia about their previous conversation regarding Alesia’s desire to become second stew, and Ben apologized to Alesia for adding to the stews’ workload. With everyone seemingly back on good terms as the guests arrived, a particularly demanding group arrived, ready to put the crew to the ultimate test.
Brandon, who almost got kicked off the boat last time he was with Jason due to a drunken swim, is requesting a big seafood lunch at 2:30 p.m. Ben, surprisingly, checked with Brandon to make sure the seafood still sounded good – he rarely does that! He also spoke with Brandon’s friend, Patrick, who has a very limited diet of only Cap’n Crunch and burgers (hold the ketchup). Despite being an incredibly picky eater, Patrick is easygoing and seems aware he’s being a bit of a bother, so he’s extra polite. Unlike someone truly difficult, he wouldn’t order a seafood feast and then complain about… well, seafood (or vegetables!).
Ben brought Patrick a burger with no toppings, but Brandon immediately expressed his disappointment. He’d been expecting a lobster and shrimp feast, and Ben had, ironically, prepared exactly that. When Carmen asked if he enjoyed it, Brandon said he hadn’t even tried it, stating he simply “doesn’t eat that.” The whole situation felt surreal. It was clear Brandon was putting on a show for the cameras, which was even more irritating than if he’d actually disliked the food. Ultimately, a difficult guest like Brandon has a way of bringing the crew closer. Both Daisy and Jason comforted Ben, assuring him he’d done everything right and the food looked fantastic.
Luckily, we don’t have to watch Brandon much longer, as the show quickly jumps through the rest of the day. Jason reluctantly agrees to wear a revealing swimsuit for an extra $10,000 tip. The guests spend the afternoon swimming and then have dinner – surf and turf, though Patrick seems to be eating plain noodles. They celebrate Brandon’s birthday with ten separate cakes that Ben secretly bought from the store. I would normally object to this, but honestly, asking for ten individual cakes is absurd. Plus, these guests don’t seem to appreciate good food – only one person notices the cakes aren’t homemade.
Brandon requests a bagel first thing in the morning. When Ellie announces it’s ready over the radio, all that comes through is static. While Ellie and Ben try to figure out where the stew is, Daisy and Jenna are still waiting for Brandon’s bagel. Daisy gets annoyed when she goes to check on it, realizing Ellie could have easily brought it up herself if it was already prepared. It seems obvious that Ellie should have tested her radio to see if anyone could hear her in the first place. Earlier in the season, a miscommunication like this would have caused a lot of drama, but now everyone is just too exhausted to argue. You can practically imagine them handing Brandon a cold bagel with a sigh.
The day passes quietly. Before the final dinner service, Daisy offers Jenna some encouraging words, and Jenna creates a stunning table setting for a seven-course meal inspired by the seven deadly sins – with guests dressing up as each sin. In the kitchen, Ben is overwhelmed trying to serve multiple courses to a particularly demanding guest. Ellie is pleased with the cheesecake she made and offers a sample to Alesia and Jason, but Ben, unusually focused, asks her to avoid talking to the crew. As for Patrick, the plan is to serve him a simplified three-course meal reminiscent of something Kevin McAllister would create: a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, lemon pasta, and cheese pizza. And, predictably, when the sandwich arrives, Patrick complains that the peanut butter is crunchy.
Patrick enjoyed his meal, but Brandon didn’t. Daisy told Ben that Patrick felt he wasn’t getting as much food as everyone else, and Ben joked that Patrick barely eats anything at all. Ben finally lost his patience when Ellie insisted Patrick’s pizza be served on a cake stand, worried it would be difficult to eat (apparently unaware that people usually eat pizza with their hands!). He snapped at her, but Ellie calmly took it in stride, seeing her restraint as a sign of personal growth – a low bar, she thought. After the pizza was served on the cake stand, Ben apologized for his outburst. This led to a running joke – you could play a drinking game watching Below Deck Down Under season four by taking a shot every time Ben apologizes! Despite the small issues, dinner was a success, with only Brandon voicing a complaint. The final charter of the season went very well.
The next morning, Jason has João dock the boat, and Jenna gets her well-earned stripes back from Daisy, with the captain’s permission. The feedback cards are overwhelmingly positive, and the guests leave a whopping, deserved $34,500 tip, which comes out to $2,900 each. It’s a generous tip, but commensurate with the amount of work they created for the crew. No one gets the helmet, though Jason playfully wears it out for drinks with his crew later that night. The vibes at the bar are immaculate, as if everyone were best friends all along. Alesia pulls Jenna aside to say how much she respects her and to apologize for anything she might have said about her throughout the season (I imagine she was thinking about her confessionals). The best part of the night is when Betul makes a speech thanking Jason and João for having her back. She reminisces on the talk she had with the captain all the way back on the second charter, about how hard she has worked to make a life for herself. Betul forever!
With work finally finished, Daisy is looking forward to spending more time with João. They share sweet moments at the bar and the following morning, though they always seem to go their separate ways. João, perhaps a bit *overanalyzed from therapy, feels grateful that Daisy feels comfortable sharing her feelings with him. Ben, enjoying being back to his old affectionate self, stays in a separate cabin and happily pays Ellie the money he owed her – a reward for every pet name he’d called her. Despite any past disagreements, the department heads end the season as friends, feeling positive about their captain. But that peace probably won’t last – see you all next season, same time, same place!
