Taylor Sheridan is expanding the world of Yellowstone with a new series, Dutton Ranch, following fan favorites Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser) as they relocate to Texas. Though the original Yellowstone, led by Kevin Costner, concluded with Season 5 in 2024, the Dutton family saga will continue with Dutton Ranch as one of two planned sequels debuting in 2026.
As a big fan of the Dutton family stories, I’m really excited about the newest addition! It’s called Dutton Ranch and it connects to Luke Grimes’ show, Marshals, on CBS. This all started with Yellowstone‘s first prequel, 1883, which came out in 2021. That series showed us how the very first Duttons arrived and started building their ranch in Montana’s Paradise Valley – it was amazing to see the beginnings of everything!
Dutton Ranch Nods To Yellowstone’s 1883 As Beth And Rip Move To Texas
Following a fire that destroyed their ranch in Montana, Beth and Rip purchased a new home in Rio Paloma, Texas. The final episode of Yellowstone showed them relocating to Dillon after Beth’s brother, Kayce, sold the Dutton family’s Yellowstone Ranch to the Broken Rock Tribe. This happened as John Dutton’s children dealt with the consequences of his passing.
This isn’t the first time influential figures have started fresh in Texas, hoping for a new life. As seen in 1883, James Dutton (Tim McGraw) brings his family to Fort Worth, getting ready to travel west by wagon to find a place to settle down.
As the Dutton family gets ready to travel the Oregon Trail, James Dutton confidently assembles his group in Texas to load up their wagon. Coming from Tennessee, James’ daughter is captivated by the new climate. Despite facing hardships along the way, the Duttons eventually settle on their ranch, and the state provides them with a chance to begin again.
Beth and Rip’s decision to live in Texas signals a fresh start for the Dutton family. Like James and Margaret Dutton before them, they’re stepping into the unknown and building a new life. This is the first time in 140 years that key members of the Duttons have chosen to make their home outside of Montana.
Why Beth And Rip Really Relocated To Texas For Dutton Ranch
The decision to move the main characters of the Yellowstone universe to Texas was likely influenced by real-life events. Creator Taylor Sheridan lives in Weatherford, Texas, where he owns the 600-acre Bosque Ranch, and he also owns the historic 6666 Ranch in the Texas panhandle.
Taylor Sheridan, along with David Glasser of 101 Studios and Dan Schryer, launched SGS Studios in Fort Worth, Texas, in 2025 – making it the largest production studio in the state. Since then, the studio has been used to film several of Sheridan’s shows, including Dutton Ranch and Landman, both of which are set and filmed in Texas, reflecting his strong connection to the state.
Ultimately, Beth and Rip’s fresh start isn’t the main point of their move to Texas—it’s about the future of Taylor Sheridan’s shows. As he films more series in Texas, viewers can likely anticipate that his work will continue to be connected to the state, at least for the foreseeable future.
Even The Madison, the Paramount+ series starring Michelle Pfeiffer that isn’t connected to Yellowstone, has filmed some scenes in Texas. While the show focuses on a family from Manhattan and used New York City for some filming, downtown Fort Worth stood in for the city in other scenes. Despite this, Beth’s return to Texas remains a significant moment for the Dutton family.
